A half day session to discover more of the middle section here from the big deep corner pool about half way up the beat itself (short section of some wooden fencing here on the right bank , follow this up the hill a little way and then back down to the wire fence and you can then get over this here ok to the river) up to where the brook comes in by the footbridge and a lovely well shaded section with a good series of riffle / pools here and some very good looking and good length pools too . One of those sections where once your in the water you cant get out easily (or at all ! ) until you get to the brook by the foot bridge but wadeable along edges of pools all the way up to here and you can then get out of the river ok here and walk back down the fence line back to the big corner pool.
A good number of fish where spooked in the tails of the pools.
The water above the footbridge looked very skinny and slow at the moment . The fish to hand went up to about 10inch and all on a 16 black klink'
Lovely !

My first visit to this beat. So 2pm - 7pm mostly spent exploring, since the OS map indicated some quite steep slopes adjacent, and a rather complicated water course. Much better weather than of late and quite fair conditions; though, as anticipated, poor water flow and summer vegetation at its height. The topography turned out to be as difficult to read at ground level as it is on the map, and I only covered the double bank portion of the water available.
Plenty of rising fish (small), to a surprisingly large dark olive. They were not shy, and less easily spooked than their relatives in the Monnow catchment, perhaps since the water carries a slight tinge. I rose half a dozen but they came short ( or I did!). So it was a blank - yet a most enjoyable one. Had I stayed longer, or fished harder, I am reasonably confident a couple might have come to hand. However actually catching fish seems to matter less to me than used to be the case.

Being regretfully time poor for fishing at his time of year I grabbed the opportunity today of a few hours on the water. Not an ideal day to be fishing , hot ( at last ) low water ( a pity ) and a late start 11.30 did not promise much. Hard going ,although fish were feeding on the surface they were very spooky and selective . Summer growth on the banks is at the max and getting a fly to the shady spots is a challenge. All the fish I saw were feeding in very shallow water at the heads of the pools and I had no success prospecting the bottom with nymphs. 1 x 12 ½ " trout to a size 18 para Adams.....finished at 3.30pm.

My booking here last year had been washed out to the red-mud flow of the Llynfi Dulas in flood. Also I knew this beat had been cleared in February and so I really wanted to try it. I fished for 5 hours and managed just half the distance. This beat is a series of great pools, and even with generally low water in the catchments, a reasonable flow. 8 fish were caught to dry and 4 were plump 10" trout. Stealth is everything here.

First time here for me and a corker of a river here. Even the car parking is very good , tucked out of the way and quiet and peaceful with a super view down the valley.
Right from the first pool I was getting takes to a 14 para adams fished speculatively. The third pool up with a very nice run in to it had quite a good lot of fish showing on top. The back markers where having me at it, being the small guys and shaking themselves off (note to self ...softer action rod needed next time out) but working up to the head the larger chaps where staying on. Stunning fish, fat and healthy!
From then on up there was at the very least one fish in each run or pool and it is a series of these one after the other and fairly easy going. The bigger pools had a good few fish in them it seems.
All the fish where in super condition (8" to 12") and are quite the scrappers considering a fair bit of the water is fairly sedate in flow.
The Adams accounted for them all and lots of smaller fish having a go at it but the better sized fish where nailing the fly properly. I can live with that!
A small amount of varied fly coming off here and there and the rocks and stones where they where clean where crawling with bugs and micro caddis cases.
A pair of Kingfishers where whizzing up and down all afternoon. Stunning.
I didn't get time to do the whole beat, maybe a third of it but will be back for more for sure and am looking forward to that.
A cracking beat, don't know how this one had not got on my radar before now !

River very low indeed. Fished 1830-2030. But the sun came out as I hit the river, and was right in my eyes in nearly every run. Fished a mayfly and para Adams, and though I got a few rises I didn't hook any. Plenty of tly about, and a good number of smaller fish rising.

Fished for 3 hours or so on lower section of beat (up-to end of left bank access). Wading and access is fairly easy along the length, and certainly plenty of fish in evidence. Some sections very difficult to cast in, but where it is possible, fish very willing to take whatever was offered. I lost / missed probably three times as many as I landed, once being so pleased to be able to land a fly on the water that I forgot to strike!
Will certainly return to explore other parts of this river.

Despite the weather I had 3 hours on the river in the afternoon. River is only slightly colored and in the first pools trout were rising to mayflies. Biggest trout was around 11". Best pattern was a simple mayfly imitation fished in the surface.

Following on from lower beat a shared rod covered half a mile on this , one of my favourite steams, and also a first time on the Dulas for AB. 8 wbt to hand 6-10 ins, massive fly life, saw just one May taken by a greedy little bugger at a second attempt, still makes me smile witnessing this. 5 AM start began to take its toll so retired to take on the climb back up, knowing there was still more of the beat and the absolute certainty of more fine wild stream fishing to have boosted the catch return. The Mayfly hatch is something to behold here, I'll be back again for , I think, the fourth time over the past few years and AB is a certain returnee.
