Beat:Pontithel - River Llynfi

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

River was running fast and dropping with some colour. Water visibility was about 30cm which meant reading the water and wading above knee height was tricky. Fished about half the beat and finding fish was challenging. Eventually found bouncing a weighted (4mm tungsten bead) nymph along the bottom Polish style tempted bites. Lost 4 and landed one trout and one out of season grayling both about 25cm.

fished from 10am till 3.30pm french nymphing. all trout taking aqua baetis nymph with 3mm bead and all grayling taking gammarus on dropper. trout were all between 7-12 inches and grayling between 8-19 inches . maybe the pollution incident has damaged the trout population more than the grayling? though there seemed far less of the bigger grayling also with only five of the grayling caught around the 18 inch mark. all the same lets hope this beat over the next few years gets back to what it can produce

Beautiful beat, and although some olives were hatching there was no sign of any trout feeding (although I was only there for the morning), andI didn't have any interest in nymphs or dry flies. The current was still very strong after recent rain, and a bit coloured. Not sure whether it was that, the late spring, or perhaps the sunny conditions were keeping fish down deep.

A pleasant spring day with the river looking in perfect condition. The water was very cold although the flies were coming off steadily. No Trout seen rising or caught on nymphs.

Tough day! River had risen over the past 12 hours, and with that came several periods where diesel wash off looked like it was washing through. Fished duo and french nymph, but alas no joy.
Beautiful beat though, with a huge variety of water over the 2/3 of a mile. Back in new years day.
Note - in summer, unless wading, the majority of the beat would be inaccessible.

no fish caught. I did not manage to find the fish today but did find a half eaten salmon on the bank. Not certain if it had spawned.

5 x grayling 6-18 inches, Tungsten Hare's Ear and Pink Shrimp fished on a French leader outfit. To be more accurate, 4 shots from 6-9 inches, lots of grayling parr, plus one beast of a cock grayling at 18 inches which put up a most determined resistance for a time. I thought I had hooked into a log for a couple of seconds. To Be fair, RW of Portishead (report 3rd November) showed the way. Plenty of cold, clear water coming down. I think there are reasons to be cheerful about the recovery of this stream.
