An unusual morning. Heavy rain just before dawn such that, feeling somewhat tired and lazy, I was minded to stay in bed. I decided to fish the Bideford Brook anyway and despite low water after this long drought was pleased to find a lot of fly hatching - olives, pale wateries and some sedges - and fish rising to a dry fly. They were better fish than usual too, including a 12 incher which isn't quite unknown here, but is a good one for this little stream. Before I reached the top It all came to an end with a sudden rush of muddy flood water from the Forest upstream which made me get out promptly. 9 x trout 9-12 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer

I found this beautiful beat was low on water and too dry to fish but what water there was plenty of brown trout skurrying around in the shallows, I will return when in rains.

This is a smashing little beat, unfortunately the water level was too low, seen plenty of brownies skurrying around plus a Dab! I will be back again when level is acceptable to fish.

Water was still very low and clear. I would say this isn’t a good bet unless there has been significant rain. The best is relatively short a mornings fishing. I arrived very early and hooked and returned the fish by 7am no bites after that. The river bed is very snagging for nymphs. And growth overhead meant every other cast snagged above too.

6 x trout 6-10 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. Early visit with the river very low, but rain on the way. No natural rises, so prospecting, and missed a lot of fish this morning.

Great day at Bideford Brook. 26 trout and 1 roach. Sorry to report that only 3 trout were caught on dry, a similar number on PTN but the rest on squirmy wormy!!
The brook was low and clear. The water dropped even further from the previous week. There were lots of tiny midge hatches throughout the day but only occasional rises.
With a lot of hatches, I decided to start with dry (Klinkhammer) but failed to rise any fish. A switch to a duo didn't improve the situation. The next change to a squirmy wormy instantly saw a fish and they kept coming steadily, ended up with 26 trout between 8-10 inches and 1 roach. Many trout came unexpectedly from very shallow riffles and some came just under the rod tip. The last three trout took Klinkhammer.
It was a great surprise to have caught this many, considering a slow start. Great day!

11 x trout, 8 - 10 inches, klinkhammer, PTN jig and squirmy-wormy.
The water was low and crystal clear. The foot path along the brook was very over grown. However it meant less dog walkers and I pretty much had the Brook to myself.
Hooked 4 trout downstream of the bridge but didn't land them. Luckily, 11 more came to hand upstream of the bridge, ranging between 8 and 10 inches. All looked fat and healthy.
Four fish took s14 klinkhammer. The rest fell to s18 PTN jig and s14 squirmy-wormy. Great day.
