In what was to be a theme for the weekend, we had to be flexible with fishing due to water levels. We didn't even attempt Ty Newydd at Erwood, knowing the Wye levels would be favouring Salmon fishers rather than us Trouters. From experience the nearby Edw is sometimes accessible even when its destination (Wye) is raging. After a slow start, the Cregrina beat was very productive. All fish caught on an Iron Blue dry, and returned.

21 Trout

No fish caught. A few small pool runs were fished. Very challenging with such a low water level. Beautiful wildlife.

Cloudy but warm day, wind a little strong but not noticed when on the river.
A frustrating day, only 5 trout between 4 and 6 inches to hand but at least three times that lost and even more missed.
Fished dry all day on small klinkhammers, all of the fish coming from tails of pools or slower water.
Fish rising all day but had to move very slowly because the river very low, consequently took me 8 hours to complete the beat!I should have caught loads more and I'm sure a better angler would have done.
Nice beat which was very varied, both in the water and the wading.

5 Trout

Fished from 1300 to 1500 on a rather cold and windy day.
4 Trout around 6 inches all on a size 12 Gold head nymph with Tenkara rod.
A few LDO's hatching and 1 fish seen rising.

Last Trout trip of the season unfortunately so decided on Cregrina. Water was a little low and very clear and the Trout were mainly in the slow glides which made approach tricky. 9 Trout all around 6 inches took a size 16 F fly about the same amount lost.
Lovely day on the Edw, roll on spring.
Also spotted some Japanese knot weed towards the bottom of the beat.

9 Trout

Fished Cregrina below the bridge for 2 hours in the morning but with no fish caught. Getting to the bottom of beat quite tricky but worth persevering down the very steep banks to a very wild (and I suspect little-fished) beat. Disturbed an unidentified bird of prey (Buzzard?) off one of the stream mini-cliffs which was quite a shock - those birds are huge close-up! A downpour at noon signalled an early lunch and a move to Hergest for the afternoon.

River very low but still good size fish in the deep pools. Caught 3 and lost 3 .

3 Trout

Four hours of kneeling down and side casting produced 3 wbt of five to eight inches to the Griffiths gnat. Retired aching to the Seven Stars and lubricated with a few fine pints of " Butty". All in all another enjoyable three days on the wild streams, thanks WUF.

Started fishing a Duo of Deer hair Sedge and PTN and had several fish on the nymph. Around lunchtime more fish were rising to the dry so changed to a Griffith gnat and had some good sport on the dry. Finished around 3 with a dozen to hand and plenty more missed or lost.

12 Trout

Another cloudy, chilly day. Water pushing through nicely on the Edw but little fly life. The odd olive and grannom but sparse and random.
Quite a tight little beat now the canopy is in full swing. Worked very hard for 5 wbt to about 9" on dries - tried out some new specialist barbless flies from a small online retailer - very impressed with the quality and presentation.
The heavens opened on several occasions - end of June, please!!
Early finish to watch Wales delight a nation. Don't take me home......
