Beat:Lower Crai
Fishing:Trout (River)

Dreich weather, drizzle followed by rain followed by drizzle followed by rain. I made two passes of the beat, one with a small nymph, one with a small caddis dry and saw no fish and caught no fish.

The Lower Crai is lovely. Long-ish flats and short riffles. All the best-looking spots are very tree-hung. This beat strikes me as a hatch beat: it can look pretty fish-less but then when the insects appear so do the fish.
I didn’t fish either long or well today but did happen to be at the right spot - a deeper chute, heavily tree-hung - just when the fish appeared, and managed three on a dry (olive comparadun) before normal incompetence resumed. One was a clonker though, 1lb 10oz, my biggest from a wild stream.

Lovely couple of hours upstream dry fly fishing in to early evening..Couple of takes on dun patterns but nothing came of it! ...Didn't venture far upstream of the footbridge.. only as far as next field along as a few fences to climb over.. next time will bring felt or studded waders... like walking on bars of soap otherwise!

The Usk still too high, but the Crai was fishable. Although no fish were caught and no flies hatching yet, it was better to be on a river than not.

very clear , didn't see a fish or touch one , the river was perfect and later in the year will i think fish well. The reason for the dot day i think is because there were a lot of olives coming off just after lunch , the fish weren't rising but i think taking emergers which i did not have any .

The river low and clear; lots of slippery algae in the slower sections. A few flies hatching: some sort of pale olive and a sedge. Some rises, none anywhere near my flies. The valley is very beautiful. Although the directions say there is a signpost at the last turn, and a sign saying dead end, neither survives. But it it still the second turning to the left after a long run down the valley.
