Good day at Cannop Book, 22 fish (21 trout and 1 roach). The trout were mostly juvenile, between 4 and 6 inches. That probably explained why I missed / lost so many fish. Dries outfished nymph today. Size 14 Klinkhammer caught most of the fish.

Checking my record, my previous trip was nearly 3 years ago. Time flew and it was great to be back. There is a new regulation to spray the wades and gears with Virkron disinfectant to prevent the outbreak of crayfish plague to a nearby Blackpool. I am happy to comply with it. However, talking to dog owners whose dogs jumped into the water, none of them know about it. I felt a signpost to inform the general public would be necessary if we are serious about protecting the native white-clawed crayfish.

Sadly, there are signs of poaching. Found a spinner hung -up on a tree branch. The hook and blade still looked shiny with no rust, suggesting the activity was fairly recent. I also came across one chap with coarse fishing gears. I didn't see him fishing. He just walked by to say hello and ask if I caught anything. He wished me luck and then quickly disappeared, before I could engage a longer conversation with him. For the rest of the stretch, I didn't see him again. So I guessed he could be fishing a free-stretch elsewhere (is there one?) or if he were to fish at the brook, he probably had no idea that he needed to purchase a day-ticket and would be limited to fly-fishing method only. Again, a signpost to provide the general public about fishing information would be extremely useful. It could even generate more revenue if people know they could fish there. Just a thought...

Nice afternoon out but should have taken a shorter rod!

10 x trout 6-10 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. A couple of hours on a rather muggy afternoon. Believe it or not, this is the first time this year for me on this one, and it's surprising how much damage late winter storms did. At least 30 new trees down across it. Two thirds of it is accessible though and there is still plenty to go at.

Decent amount of water still pushing through this beat. Three small trout caught on a klinkhammer. Quite a technical fish, what with all the overhanging trees and bushes. Worthy of 2-3 hrs of exploration.

22 x trout, Rusty Klinkhammer. All small fish, barely a couple of them over 6 inches. Still, it bodes well for the future. Fished early, before the dog walkers. A very large number of trees down now on this beat, but still room to fish. The recent rain seems to have freshened it up.

Great day in a very beautiful place, however saw two groups of people bait fishing one man with his son using worms and another group of 3 the father holding a fly rod in which case he should know better and the two lads with bait tackle. Not really that bothered as I had my daughters with me and it was only £11 to fish but but if I had wanted a few hours serious fishing would not have appreciated it.

Great day on this lovely little river, really wild & very challenging fishing. Used my 8’ rod without issue though I can see why 7’ 3# is recommended. Saw lots of brownies and initially had several bites/rises in various pools. Water low but plenty of deep pools and some perfect riffles where I caught one fish of 10” and another of 6” in perfect condition on golden bead green/red nymph, both returned. Few flies about, though the odd rise, so stuck with nymphs.

Tough fishing, lots of fallen logs and trees in river making it very difficult to make headway upstream.
