We cannot stress enough the importance of making quick and accurate returns of salmon catches, even if nothing has been caught. Recording catch data is one (perhaps the best, certainly the most cost effective) way of determining the success of our river restoration works. Although affected by short term variations in weather and water conditions, the longer term data set will build an accurate picture of our salmon runs. Catch returns can be made quickly via our online form for both Passport and non-Passport waters. Most of our reporting is from the Wye. Where a salmon has come from another river we will state accordingly.

Upper Wye is now a lovely height, and middle Wye is coming in. Lower Wye should be fishing by Sun/Mon. Still no news from the Usk, but I don't think many are out fishing. The Usk is still high for the prime lower beats. They shoud be coming in nicely over the weekend.

Water is still cold and spinner or sunk line and 1-2" tubes will give the best chance of success.

The new season is underway, which is a good time to remind to all salmon anglers of Charles Farlow Trophy, awarded to the captor of the largest fly caught salmon of the season from English and Welsh rivers. Along with their name on the trophy, the winner will receive a £500 Farlows voucher and a Goliath’ bottle of gin from Foxdenton Estate.

We always encourage good C&R practice, which includes not removing a salmon from the water. A length measurement taken while the fish is in the water would be preferred to weighing the fish. Further terms of entry for the Charles Farlow Trophy can be found here.

Good luck!
