We cannot stress enough the importance of making quick and accurate returns of salmon catches, even if nothing has been caught. Recording catch data is one (perhaps the best, certainly the most cost effective) way of determining the success of our river restoration works. Although affected by short term variations in weather and water conditions, the longer term data set will build an accurate picture of our salmon runs. Catch returns can be made quickly via our online form for both Passport and non-Passport waters. Most of our reporting is from the Wye. Where a salmon has come from another river we will state accordingly.

Wye & Usk: We have received another report of a fish with fungal infection. The below photo taken by an angler on the Usk near Llangynidr yesterday shows what apears to be a small diseased salmon. The prolonged cold water temperatures of spring have probably contributed to more cases this year although seeing diseased fish this late in the year is uncommon.

If you witness diseased fish and/or fish in distress, please report it to Natural Resources Wales or Environment Agency, as well as informing us.

More information is availlable on the Foundation website, from Natural Resources Wales and the Environment Agency.

WARNING: ALGAL BLOOM RIVER ITHON

An algal bloom was witnessed in the river Ithon yesterday. The lower reaches of the river were pea green and evidence of the bloom seen in the Ithon's headwaters, over 30 miles upstream with its conflunce with the Wye. Notably, the upper Wye above the Ithon confluence was running clear, as was the lower Irfon. The middle Wye around Brewardine was reported as carrying a tinge of green too.

Given the weather forecast, it is likely that we will soon be witnessing similar conditions in the lower Wye as we did this time last year i.e. thick green water. Salmon anglers are advised to make the most of these current conditions while they can.
