We cannot stress enough the importance of making quick and accurate returns of salmon catches, even if nothing has been caught. Recording catch data is one (perhaps the best, certainly the most cost effective) way of determining the success of our river restoration works. Although affected by short term variations in weather and water conditions, the longer term data set will build an accurate picture of our salmon runs. Catch returns can be made quickly via our online form for both Passport and non-Passport waters. Most of our reporting is from the Wye. Where a salmon has come from another river we will state accordingly.

Bigsweir: Report 6 in April and 1 on the 1st May.

5:57 pm

A welcome and unexpectedly heavy dump of rain in the mountains today. Both rivers are rising and the wetland behind my house now has a flow coming from it...unexpected given how dry it had become. This spate is likely to be short lived and pretty dirty, but should get the smolts out and move some fish up both rivers.  More rain is forecast for later in the week. Water temperatures are still on the low side, so it remains to be seen how hard and fast the fish will run.

The prolonged low levels and cold water this spring are ideal conditions for salmon and trout fungal infections to proliferate in rivers. The Environment Agency have issued advice on what to do if you come across a diseased fish. See here for more details.
