First time fishing at Abernant. Wye Valley as picturesque as ever, and a really interesting variety of water to fish. I arrived mid afternoon, and as inviting as Lady Alexander's looked, I resisted the temptation to jump straight in, decided to save it for later, and turned left to get to the bottom of the beat. It was tricky down there! The wading to reach much of the more promising looking water was a bit hairy (the staff saved me from a dunking on a couple of occasions), while the water on the inside was slow, shallow and clear. There were a few sporadic risers around however, and a cautious approach and a size 18 olive comparadun fooled two - one landed, ~11", and a really nice one snapped off on the hookset. Doh. Might have been my splashing around, but the rises went from sporadic to non-existent after an hour or so, so walked up to the top of the beat for a look at the rest of it. A black hot-collar ptn took three more small fish from the streamy section directly below where Aberedw flows in, with a few others missed/slipping off the barbless hook as they splashed around in the shallow riffles. As dusk fell, and after a quick bite admiring the view, I headed back down to Lady Alexandra's. There had been BWOs hatching on and off throughput the day, so I was hopeful for a bit of an evening rise. Not much evidence of that unfortunately, but I did spot what looked like some minnow/fry bashing going on in the shallows, so I tied on a small streamer for a last cast or two. Five or six 'last casts' later the line locked up. It wasn't a monster on the end, but in the semi-dark an amped-up 16" trout definitely got my heart pumping. An exhilarating end to really engaging day.
