Got to the beat at 12.30 to find a steady rise of dark olives coming off the water in Lady Alexander's Catch with fish rising freely. Though dry fly would have probably been successful I started with a team of three wets unweighted to stay high. Plenty of tugs and taps and four fish to hand fairly quickly (plus a couple lost near the net). Although I had on a GRHE and an olive spider all four trout were caught on C V Hancock's 'Pet' wet fly as described by Courteny Williams. As this was something I had tied the same morning I felt more than pleased. I then heard my first cuckoo of spring to add to the pleasure.
The rise subsided at about 1.30 and fishing slowed a little so I moved upstream to the Abernant Pool but found it unusually quiet with only one fish caught (again to the Pet). Back in the faster water downstream the odd fish was still rising and I caught steadily until packing up about 6.30. 12 trout in total with 8 to the Pet and the others (plus 4 salmon parr) to the GRHE and olive spider equally. Tip of the hat to C V Hancock.

Really fancied my chances, river perfect and overcast and with all the rain we have had, thought there must be a chance. The wind became a pain by lunchtime and give up about 3.
Is it just me or are the Abernant Sheep really aggressive! Ewes with their lambs being very protective and kept chasing me, had to make a dash for the gate, I think I preferred the Huge Bulls which were there last year!

What a contrast to yesterday on the Irfon. 3 Trout and lost count of Grayling 15+ All nice fish around 10" - 12" a few a bit bigger. There was lots of Olives on the water most the day, no fish coming up for them, I did not see a fish rise all day. Caught all my fish on small gold head PTN. Lost a really big fish, went off like a train downstream and hooked pulled out!
Really enjoyed my weekend despite my blank yesterday, I will be back.

2 foot 5 on gauge and 3 foot visibility. No salmon seen. trout rod out in middle of day for 3 fish from 10-12 inches, couldn't tempt a much larger trout rising in the pool just above the Edw junction.

Another cold and windy day with river clear and fairly low. Second visit to this part of the river, with easy parking and access. Fished again with two weighted nymphs on a floating line. Worked by way up from Stone to Lady Alexander's catch with not much action, Found a willing Grayling of about 6 inches that couldn't resist my Red Tag. After three hits managed to land this little monster. Well hooked but netted and returned it with no problems. Did try to get further upstream but found path heavy going. Would advise people to test out path prior to tackling up. Wading was difficult but very new to this and wadding stick a must. A good swim as last year helped land a 10-15lb cock salmon, worth a third visit.

As there had been so much rain, we thought we'd try an upstream beat early season, the logic being the salmon could be anywhere in the system. We'd anticipated the water would drop quicker than it did so there was probably 8" too much water on the beat. However, it looked very fishable and the water was pretty clear. My companion had a good sized grayling on a cascade fly and, having swapped to trout tackle, I had a tiny trout on a shrimp. We stayed at the Old Vicarage along the road, which was very cosy and hospitable. The day was marred by the fact that the path to Edw Pool and Abernant Stream was completely blocked by a fallen tree. It is obvious that work has been carried out to make the path more user friendly but the tree has fallen since then I believe. The beat details really ought not include these pools as this is the third time I have booked this beat and haven't once been able to access the top two pools.
