Mike Bacon caught the first fish, approx 11lbs cock fish, slightly coloured, on a small cascade on The Maddox pool. Paul Henry then caught an approx 13lbs cock fish from The Stones with a Silver Stoat's Tail. One other fish lost. Perfect conditions.

River very clear. Had a firm handshake from a fish in cottage pool, though admittedly through my own eagerness I lifted into it too soon..... no other fish seen.

Easy access to fishery and into river for wading. Excellent guidance from Oliver. Good to see E.A. Bailiffs on the bank.

Some fish showing Vanstone early. Lovely day in Mick's company to whom many thanks for casting advice (but no, I shan't be taking up knitting.....yet). Nil return.

A first Wye salmon for GORDON Wigginton. An 11lb plus hen from the Vanstone. Much joy all around. I had a decent Chub at the same time from the Maddocks - big enough to raise hopes for a moment or two. Helpfully guided by Mick Sutton a good day.

Another very frustrating day. Canoes everywhere, from the start of the day to the end of the day. A bit of a pointless experience, again.

A wonderful gillie on this beat - really recommend you book him (Mick). Despite his best efforts, there was little chance of catching anything today as it was canoes everywhere, from the start of the day to the end of the day.

A bit of a pointless day's fishing. If I'd known it would be this full of canoes I wouldn't have come.

The right bank - sorry reservation - has seen the arrival of the Kayak and Canoe tribe to their summer hunting grounds and their 'Tipee Adventure' arriving in their Jeep Cherokee's. They come in peace but not peacefully. I feel like I've paid an entrance fee to a themed Pocahontas and Hiawatha theme park rather than a days Salmon fishing. The residents splashing around in the water have sun-burnt arms and legs and wag their tails and bark – "Sorry mate, didn't see you there!" The Swans mass in the historic pools - who can blame them - safety in numbers. As for the Salmon, well they used to roam our great river in vast numbers like the great buffalo. I'm happy to take my chances and be washed off with good grace but surely the time has come to introduce a new OFF policy, I will leave it to you to choose the word preceding it!
