A lovely stretch of river and well looked after. A lovely sunny winters day fishing a winter grayling ticket but sadly no Grayling caught. The river was still quite full in parts and made wading some of the pools tricky or impossible. I did land a small brown from Llandiro Pool which was quickly released. Fishing french leaders with a team of 2 weighted barbless nymphs, purple flash was the colour that tempted the small brown. Definitely a beat I will be returning too when river levels drop.

A lovely autumnal day on the upper Wye. A very well looked after beat, in fact the best cared for beat I have fished in Wales, with excellent access and variety of water available to fish. Flurries of sedge and BWOs all day, but the main hatch was a prodigious spinner fall of "autumn leaves", including Oak, Beech and Ash in vast quantities, making fly fishing incredibly difficult and nigh on pointless for the majority of the day. Eventually I found a run with an eddy on the far bank which was keeping the flow clear, and managed to lever out a couple of Grayling of 1.5lb on heavy, but subtly coloured nymphs. Several salmon seen showing and two brownies lost early on in the fight.

Hard to detect genuine takes in the ‘leaf soup’ .I probably missed a lot but managed 3 grayling to 14” and a nice OOSBT. All to nymphs with pink in them fished Euro style.

I always enjoy fishing here. River was a little lower than it was last time, which meant the fish weren't where I expected them to be! All caught on nymphs

Lovely day though fishing was a struggle In the morning with only two grayling from down at the bottom of the beat. Fished back Up the river with nothing doing until a 15 minute spell had 3 grayling and a trout all above 18 inches. Then carried on up the beat with nothing else except a few half hearted rises.

About 6 I was faffing around trying to catch some tiddlers in the slow water at top of the beat, contemplating whether it was time to call it a day, when I was tipped off about rising fish back down the bottom so headed back down there. What followed was some of the best of fishing I can recall (in my relatively short time fishing the Wye).

In about 20 minutes I’d had 3 trout up to 17 inches and 2 grayling up to 12 inches as well as hooking and losing another 4. Fantastic!

All caught on various pattern of dry flies and returned safely. The beat is brilliant and well worth a visit at this time of year. Hopefully - weather and lockdown dependant - might be able to squeeze in another day before the year is out.

There was no report at the time of writing to find a name but the tip of fish rising came from the chap who fished the beat yesterday. Thank you very much!

Only one small trout and one smallish grayling on klinkhammers but a lovely day out. I fished from the bottom of the beat from about 11.30, and made it most of the way up.

Clearly what I should have done is return to the bottom in the mid-afternoon. I returned the following day just to take a look and saw numerous fish rising. I tipped off the person fishing at the top of the beat and judging by his catch return it looks like he cashed in! So gratifying to read about this and I’ll know better myself next time.
