River very low and glides very slow. 0.39m on the Elan guage keeping the water temperature down to 15 degrees. Mainly sunny and quite calm. Some midge, saw no upwings all day, intermittent sedge returnees at times and not much sign of errant terrestrials on the water. So, very little to encourage fish to rise, though there were a few sippers in foam lanes, all of which proved to be trout. Didn't raise a graying all day and only managed to find two on a nymph fished duo. Also dredged a few of the usual likely spots, and others currently more accessible, with heavier artillery but only managed to connect with another trout. Best trout 16 inches which, together with most of the others, was taken on a dark HE CDC sedge pattern, which also caught the most interesting catch of the day, a 4.5lb chub - not what I came expecting to fish for but a welcome lump nonetheless. It was one of a shoal on the fin in clear, shallow, sluggish water at the bottom of the beat. Having set the ambush, and once caught, most of the rest of the fish followed it for several minutes until they were about two rods length away, at which point and much as expected, they all just melted away! Apologies to all holiday-makers, but bring on the rain and lots of it - our rivers need a good clear out before September.

Trout up to 10" and good sized grayling up to 17" caught on tight line nymphs and duo. A sleepy day with only Mr Otter to keep me company.

When the weather is hot - head up the valley! Doldowlod always a favourite but another rod got there before us so Craig Lyn for us...
Some surface activity to sedges. medium and blue winged olives throughout the day. The fish came in groups - all on dries as usual but often with added skate...
Best fish a 17" grayling which was fighting fit although it bore a significant cormorant scar - well healed, but a probable culprit was lurking.... Best trout 16" and along with another 14" er beautiful fish - spotted like leopards with huge fins, Wye trout at their best. No sign of a Craig Lyn monster today but we'll be back....

Another notch on the learning curve here today. Still haven't cracked it though but a fabulous place to be trying to! Interesting today as with it so low and clear, one could see the river bed quite well mostly, where it looks before to have been fathoms deep and dark . Not quite so deep after all in places and lots of good feature and gravels.
Very little fly about which figures with the time of season etc.

Got sucked in and spent a bit too much time trying to outwit some grayling at Penlanole and in my defence some of these fish looked to be clonkers . Some gave me my chance but fluffed 'em all in the excitement ! So just the one brown out of the pacy water it was later on but a good size and good conditioned fish and a proper hard case that really didnt want to see the net. Looking forward to adding the next notch...and latching in to one of those Penlanole submarines...well, hopefully.

Oh and for any campers out there , I was stopping at the Doliago farm site 5 mins up the road. A super little site it is .

I fished for a couple of hours in the evening in pretty low water. There was a big hatch of sedges and a few fish rising for them but I managed to miss 7/8 takes on a dry sedge pattern, the last of which looked big from what I saw of it before I turned away.

No matter what time of year or what the flow is like, this is a stunning stretch of the Wye. I'm not overly keen on fishing the main river, sometimes I've looked at certain beats and haven't had the slightest idea what to do ! With Craig Llyn though I'm given half a chance and seeing it at the level it was today, I learned a bit more. 2x Grayling 7& 17 ins and a very disgruntled wbt of 16/17 ins all to a Greenwells Glory.

Tough conditions - low water and high sun. DB took a good grayling mid-morning on a heavy nymph fished NZ style in fast water; approx 1.5-2lb and in great condition. SB lost another just before lunch on a heavy nymph. Not much surface movement.

After lunch some splashy rises started to appear - couple of half-hearted attempts at the sedge came to nothing, and there was very little activity there after. DB did take a small WBT on a deep nymph as evening approached, and then lost 2 grayling as the day wound to a close.

A great beat with great access - just needs a flush of water to really bring it to life.

Conditions were perfect, I really feel this is my favorite stretch of River, but no fish today.
Which I really feel was my fault, quite a few takes, just not quick enough. Definitely be back for more.

And even though the river was low and the fishing was tough. Managed to catch a few really big Grayling and the odd trout. Brilliant day. One Grayling over 50cm
