We were very lucky. Heavy overnight rain raised the Irfon, Ithon and Wye at Builth by over 1ft but the Upper Wye only rose 3” to a height of 0.62 on the EA gauge at Ddol Farm. The river was clear and very fishable. The weather was mild, which resulted in good hatches of olives in mid-morning and again in the afternoon. Two of us managed about 30 grayling to about 17” and 6 out of season brown trout to 15”. Most of these were caught on small olive dry flies, casting to rising fish. Fishing slowed about 3pm when the sun fell behind the hills. Nice long beat. Great day.

River a little high for good fishing. A dozen grayling and a a few stockie trout. Grayling all taken on deep gold head nymphs mainly in the tails of the pools as too deep to wade in most places. A small trickle of olives during the afternoon and some rising fish in the lower section, though bait anglers on the lower section had them covered better.
Nice beat but needs to be lower than 0.68 on the EA's Ddol Farm guage to give good access. A few salmon sloshed about and evidence of a couple of redds in places.
WUF Note: Craig Llyn is fly fishing only. The lower half is single bank fishing so the bait anglers would have been from the opposite side.

Lovely water, but no sign of fish rising and a cold blustery downstream wind convinced us that 1 ½ hours was more than enough. Water temperature 47F. We caught one decent grayling (around the 2 lb mark).
The Wye valley and the river were spectacularly beautiful and both (part-time) anglers thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Lots of grayling (including 3 in the 17-18" range) & 5 0r 6 OOS WBT came to a variety of methods from heavy bugs & nymphs to dry fly. We found fish both in the faster runs and in slower, deeper glides. Water level was good as was clarity, which did not seem to be affected by the worsening weather conditions on the day. The leaves were a constant problem but that's par for the course at this time of year! More goosanders were seen diving after fish in one of the deeper pools.

Lots of smaller grayling about today. Though there wasn't much surface activity I took nearly all the fish by prospecting with a small Klinkhammer. A couple of OOS trout were also taken on a small bead-headed PTN fished duo. I did see a couple of goosanders - something that seems to be happening more and more often.

Wonderful beat at Craig Llyn. As pretty as it gets. To stand in the middle of the Wye on this beat in decent weather is just bliss. Lots of interesting water over gravel beds but some tricky wading over very large boulders. Around a dozen good size grayling on various dry flies. Great day, nice welcome from the owner much appreciated, thanks WUF.

A nice beat but a nil return unfortunately. I didn't see any salmon but I believe the owner had a fish later in the day.

Well, the water was too high but clear and what a lovely spot to fish. With a foot off the gauge it would have been perfect. Anyway, something new happened to me. Fishing a 1 inch brass tube fly and sink tip to get the fly down a bit I caught a cracking 2lb grayling. Gave me a moment of excitement as it took! Certainly a beat well worth a go again.
