Conditions not at all conducive to dry fly fishing. Not a cloud in the sky, although thankfully never hot nor too windy. Still, it was very pleasantly surprising to see LDOs and March Browns hatch in such numbers from 12.30 - 2pm. A few fish came to the surface and some were caught but the best of the fishing was later in the afternoon as the hatch petered out, when we enjoyed some superb sport with hard fighting, good sized trout. Best fish again 18”, with 2@17”,2@16”1@15”2@14”and the rest 12-13”. Wonderful !

Feels like the new season has been a long time coming with what we have all gone through over the last 12 months. To be back out on the river amongst the early celandines and wood anenomes was certainly good for the soul….
It was a cold day – better when the sun emerged from behind the clouds but mostly it didn’t! However when it did about 1pm there was an absolute blizzard march brown hatch – not seen one of that intensity before. The fish went potty but by the time the fly was changed it was all over. Never mind, there was a trickle of olives – large dark and uprights – to make the fish look up occasionally. We brought two to hand – clonkers of 18 and 20 inches, and two more were lost to long distance catch and release. Grey parachute did the trick.
So a typical early season Usk day. There is some great water on this beat. Also a mink in residence who took a fish as big as he was! If anyone locally wants to know where the den is please contact me via the office – an invasive species.

Maybe the last time I fish this water. Bank access now really poor. And moving along the river very hard - there used to be clear access down at the end of fields and then back up the other side of the streams. But those haven't been maintained. Just makes it a hard slog except for the top 1/4 mile. Shame.

One fish caught in fast water on a GRHE nymph. Lots of fish around including some sizeable, but very easily spooked.

As others have stated quite overgrown and hard to access any fishing. Was only in for an hour or so while passing and lovely to be back in the river

Reasonable amount of water moving through with some colour. Two trout about 3/4lb, both to p black bead head nymphs.
Two other fish hooked but lost. Lovely to be on the river.

Previous returns comment on lack of accessibility. The most frustrating aspect of this for me was the style to access the second meadow. The bottom rung/step was way to high - approx 6 inches above my knee ( I am 5ft 9). God knows how anyone smaller than me would get over it.

First time in the usk, access is really difficult for the first half of the beat from Ashford house , but gets easier as you move towards the bridge bailiff said “river was up slightly on normal level “ plenty of pale watery’s coming off , no activity on the surface, will try again maybe later on in the day next time , enjoyed the day tho.
