Caught a good size trout and a smaller fish on heavy nymphs in faster water.
As mentioned in previous returns, access has become very challenging and I could only manage to get to the river at single location(Chain pool, I think) and so the rest of beat remained effectively off-limits.

Not my best day on this, one of my favourite beats. It is very difficult to access the river in midsummer when the bracken on the banks is so high that you cannot work out where to fight your way through to get to the relatively few access areas down the steep banks. Stiles are all broken and there is no field margin path through cereal crops, so, until you get to the last field on the beat it is quite challenging. Once in the river I tried to wade as far as possible bit getting out was no easier than getting in. Some fly hatches but fish rises were once per fish, it seemed. However, the highlight of the day was watching a dog otter fishing about 30m away from me. I watched him diving and turning over stones and coming up with small fish (bullhead? Stone loach?) for 45 mins. He knew I was there and wasn't bothered at all. Trout weren't bothered either as I caught one a few minutes after he drifted away downstream. An absolute treat.

The small dirty rise has gone and we looked forward to some great trout fishing. Aaah but the hot bright conditions made thing difficult and the”clegs” made things worse. But the last half hour made up for it with a small spinner fall and a good few fish looking up.

Caught in a localised and very heavy storm with all too many lightening strikes nearby. The heavy rain coloured the margins and main river where a small brook ran in. However a trout or two rose to midge and small olive to redeem a very wet evening. A Barn Owl, Curlew and Kingfisher brightened the twilight.
