Brilliant sunshine and ultra low river levels made things tough but we managed to lure 3 small browns (approx 7 inches each) and a shad (the first any of us had seen and a PB at 7 inches too!) during the day. Lots of hatch going on but very little in the way of rises at all and all fish were taken to small nymphs (size 18) fished in whatever deep water we could find.
Beautiful location and we're looking forward to trying it again in better conditions.

Some great swarms of gnats and a small number of upwings hatching. Low water and clear - seen some nice trout cruising and picking flies off the surface which were hard to get a fly in front of. Great day in all.

Weather cold – hard frost last night – and cold breeze. Mild spells interspersed with cold squalls throughout the day. River low and clear. Best fishing was in the squalls however as a few March Browns and LDOs braved the conditions to emerge – and a rise followed.
Fish on this beat seem largely to resist the charms of our size 14 and 16 parachute flies – so went bigger with size 12 Imperial parachutes. Best fish nailed one – a lovely 16 incher. Two smaller fish came to ginger quills and two others were lost
So a fairly typical Usk early season day – challenging but at least one respectable fish

Arrived expecting a difficult day as temperatures were forecast to fall dramatically. Found the river to be very low but this enabled me to get into the river right at the very start of the beat which I've never managed on previous visits. I'm glad I did as there were a number of trout rising to small gnats flitting across the surface, however it soon became obvious they were going to be difficult to tempt given the flat calm, slow moving shallow water and they slowly disappeared, time to move on.
At least lunchtime a few olives started to emerge but the fish only responded when they were joined by a brief but substantial hatch of March Browns, I then took a nice fish of about 12" on a dry fly. The weather then took a turn for the worse so I headed back but by the time I reached the first field again it had improved so I spent a very pleasurable hour or two dry fly fishing taking another reasonable trout and somehow missing three others before the wind got up colder than ever and the rain started, time to call it a day and head for the B&B.
A difficult but very enjoyable day on this wonderful beat, thank you WUF.
