Spring is here at last! River full and coloured to start but fined down during the day. Experienced one of those March brown hatches to die for. Thousands hatching all in synch (what triggers it?), fish hardly know what's happening and in five minutes it's all over! Nine brown trout to 16" mostly on nymph. All safely returned. Great day.

One trout of about 1lb (released) taken on a March brown. Caught at about noon during an intense hatch of March browns and Large Dark Olives, the only hatch of the day. The weather was varied - a persistent cold wind.
Really enjoyed the fishing, although the wading was hard work. Worth a mention perhaps on the beat description? The depth of the water in particular was challenging.

A mix of sunny spells and cloud, light downstream breeze, and clear water. Nymphs fished quite deep proved most successful, but we had great sport on dry flies during a sudden hatch at around 2:30 - only for about 20 minutes - but made our day !

Water was high and pushing through after rain, and coupled with bright sunlight and a harsh downstream wind made conditions a little hard. Managed 2 WBT taken on a GRHE fished through faster water at the Bridge end of the beat.

The river was at a good height but very murky with visibility less than 40cm. No fish caught or seen.

Water levels settling and clear after recent rain. Slow start with a few missed takes to deeper nymphs. After a couple of hours 2 fish to the net on GBHE - 10 and 15". The fun started after lunch when a series of warm spells, as clouds blew over, coincided with several short hatches (March brown and olives I think). A quick change to a dry brought up a large trout which was eventually coaxed into the net. 18" and deep for this time of year at 2lb 12oz. Another 10" fish an hour later capped a very satisfactory first day out - I think I'll put my feet up for a few months.

Lovely weather to be out but some overnight rain saw the river rising through the day. It started off clear but had risen considerably and coloured up by about 4pm. There was a small hatch of LDOs late morning which never really got going, but the most tremendous March Brown hatch which lasted the best part of an hour. The river was littered with MB duns but barely a fish rose to them. Very frustrating. The height of the river made it difficult to find somewhere to fish properly. I blanked but Andreas managed 2 trout, one to an LDO emerger and another to a spider pattern. One of the toughest days I can remember on the Usk, but as always, a pleasure to be out. 4 canoes spotted - at least they were polite. This is my second consecutive trip on a WUF beat where canoes / rafts have paddled through the beat and you can tell from their gear that these are serious paddlers and not some lads having a bit of jaunt. What's to be done?

Not a day for fair weather fishermen, but the angler's obsession drove us to persevere through gale force winds and blanket rain. And what a return! Eight lovely fish between 12 and 18", mainly to a Copper John. An excellent beat, to which we will return !
