Very low and clear after several dry weeks. Of course the heavens opened the following day! A beautiful stretch with plenty of water to go at.

One 12” brown trout on weighted spider nymph, and two fry. Studs on my boots would have been useful.

It was my first time on this beat, and indeed on the Irfon. It's a long piece of water and alternates between gutters in woodland and more open sections through fields. Unfortunately, it was hot and very sunny and the water was low. While I tried for a salmon at the top of the beat, it was more in hope than expectation. I then explored the middle and then the lower section above the church for trout. Beautiful hot day but nothing was stirring, at least on the end of my line. I will be back though. Lovely beat.

The river dropped and cleared overnight and by midday the Grayling were back on the feed and rising freely to a Johnathan Barnes life jacket caddis as well as nailing the black magic nymph fished duo. Other fish were caught using tight line nymphs and latter on in the afternoon on targeted dry using an elk hair caddis sz 14. Trout to 14", Grayling to 16" and one Parr. This is a wonderful, peaceful fishery that needs a couple of days just to explore it.

Caught earlier in the day on nymph and dry fly. Fish went off as weather became hot and very sunny. Trout to 1lbs and lost a good one in the fast water. My first Irfon grayling was 3” but my second on dry was 2.25lbs - a lovely fish. Would certainly revisit this water. I don’t weigh fish or photograph them - just return them quickly. It’s only fair on the fish.
