Another great day on this stretch of river. Conditions were spot on, low and very clear with plenty of fly hatching. Once the leaves wash through im sure there will be some great dry fly fishing through early winter at the right times. Took a novice angler who fancied a day on a big river (usually fishes the river Rhymney) and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. Fished from roughly half way up the beat to the top and took grayling all through on small nymphs fished under an indicator. Adam took a personal best grayling of around 1 3/4lb. We also landed a small salmon of around 6lb which was quickly released. Looking forward to the next trip!

28 x grayling 10-16 inches, 4 x out of season trout 6-14 inches, trotting and a few at close range on the Tenkara outfit. A very nice average size of grayling, quite a few 15 and 16 inch fish and very few shotts - just what we like to think we can expect from the lower Irfon. An unusually warm day, very still and almost soundless except for the distant rattle of musketry from the ranges. In fact there were some good hatches and rises around midday - willow fly and the smaller, autumn version of dark olives. A dry fly rod would surely have done well during these.

A great beat, with a broad range of water - and so much of it that one would be hard pushed to do it justice in a day. A beautiful church at the downstream end of the beat, and a series of gorgeous pools, riffles, run and gutters. Several salmon seen jumping throughout that day too.
Two grayling caught and released on nymphs in deeper sections. Two fingerling trout also caught and released not included in count.

River conditions were excellent, slightly high and absolutely gin clear. The wind was fairly strong blowing leaves into the river which were a pain at times. We caught many grayling in most pools, the long flat glides were stuffed with fish with very little in the heads of the runs. Best methods where Long Lining and the Trio using heavy bugs. Natural patterns such as caddis were favoured with pink taking very little. We did hook one salmon around 12-15lb which lept around the pool before coming off. An excellent beat with a variety of water - can't wait to get back there.

With the river level being steady around 0.5 and only showers forecast we took the gamble. Five of us arrived to find there had been far more rain overnight than had been forecast and the river was coloured and rising fast. Sadly we were not able to fish it but we had a welcome walk along most of the water in preparation for a return visit. Spoke with the owner who was most helpful and apologetic confirming it was a wash-off. It rose to over 1.5 on the Cilmery gauge just after lunch!
