What a pleasure it is to fish this beat in good conditions ( 0.5 ddol gauge) wading is a whole lot easier because when it's afoot higher ( what I normally get ) it can be hell!. However, the fishing was quite difficult and I had to work hard to catch. The annual migration of leaves has started which made fishing the gutter awkward! Fish caught along the whole length( lower beat) using euro nymph and they were all of a good size.
Grayling to 14" and trout to 14"

River conditions high and coloured upon arrival. Levels, clarity and fishing improved by mid afternoon. Euro nymphing methods proved best in the conditions.

Difficult day on the Wye, we tried lots of nymph patterns nothing seemed to work. Then I tried a dry and had an immediate take from a grayling, which I failed to make contact with, thinking I'd cracked it I persevered on the dry for another hour with no success.
Switched to dry again on the upper part of the beat and finally managed three grayling, and a small trout between us.
Wading on the upper section was very slippery on the large boulders.

Had to work hard for my fish, on a bright day on a low and clear river. A chilly downstream breeze, that had me regretting taking off my fleece at lunchtime, compounding matters. While the low level brought water that, for a lily-livered wader like me would otherwise be inaccessible, jeez, the bottom was slippery today; so much so that, even with studded soles, on a couple of occasions, I came very close to meeting the fish on their own terms
Two good Grayling from the last (or should that be "first"?) run downstream in the first half hour. I picked up these fish by wading out a further 5 yards than I would normally dare to venture; putting the nymph right under the far bank tree line. Nothing in the gutter, but another half dozen Grayling, mostly on a dry, from the upstream section after lunch. Quality over quantity today; my first two Grayling must have gone close to 2lbs a piece, with most of the others, as my old mate Tom Dixon would put it, going "about a pound"
Wednesday's Lyepole apples went into an apple pie which, even if I say it myself, was absolutely delicious (which was a good thing, as it was big enough to feed a small army)

River had a reasonable flow although expect much lower levels presented easier wading than usual.
One nice big fish caught early on to F-fly from deep channel on lower part of beat. That promised a productive day’s fishing however it did not materialise. Gusty wind? Bright sunshine? Gin clear water? Poor skills? Who knows?

Fly fished most of the lower section. Saw an otter when first arriving. Wading much more difficult than expected.

Water fast and coloured. We will return and spend more time in the lower section. Lovely spot.

Nice day out on one of my favourite beats. Not bad fishing considering the low water conditions. Nothing massive and no trout but had 11 Grayling to hand, all on nymphs
