First time to the River Loughor so we were a little apprehensive about trying somewhere new. Unfortunately it didn't start well as we were flooded off for the first 24 hours with some unexpected rain... However, as a spate river it dropped and cleared relatively quickly so we were up and running soon after. Trout fishing during the day in bright sunshine and temperatures of over 20 degrees was tough but we landed a good amount of small, beautifully marked brownies. I need to mention Lyn Davies, who is a local fishing guide, he gave us some excellent advice on where to fish and how to fish the river. We did manage a night's sea trout fishing and after a rise in river level we were hopeful that we would have a couple of opportunities at them. Well, as we were fishing our way down our first pool, James, who was fishing in front of me with a surface lure got smashed by a very decent fish on his fifth cast! Unfortunately after some thrashing on the surface the fish came off! Expletives were used.... but an encouraging start. 10 mins later as I was swinging a fly on an intermediate line I had a tiny pluck from the darkness. I struck and a nice sea trout started cartwheeling around the pool. After a short fight we landed a lovely 2 pound sea trout. She was safely released to carry on her journey. What great couple of days on a gem of a river. Definitely not an easy river to fish but once you get the hang of it the rewards could be very worth wile. We shall return...

A near full moon, gibbous as they say, and rising early tonight. On a bright night, it's not a bad idea to forsake the Towy for the Loughor, as this twisting and winding stream has so many patches of shadow under its high banks. There are some big fish in since the last spring tide, but just a small sewin of 2 pounds took a Lyn's Secret Weapon, at the very moment the moon went behind a cloud, and proceeded to jump all over the pool. A delightful evening, and the year is getting on now - so quite a lot can be covered by midnight for those who have things to do in the morning!

Blank. Lyn and I tried the river after the committee meeting this month, starting near the top end a little after 10.30. Generally quiet at first except for brownies plucking at the tube fly. Only my second trip on this section this year, and I'm having to re-learn some of the wading after the winter's floods. There are pots developing where there used to be straight gravel runs. Lyn, fishing an intermediate line, had one heavier "sewin knock" which didn't catch on. After midnight, stirred up perhaps by my use of a surface lure despite the moonlight, a few sewin in the 3-5 pounds range showed, one of them jumping virtually under my rod top. One violent wrench on the lure (a Towy Intruder) which also failed to connect properly. Left at 2AM as we both had things to do in the morning, with that feeling we had somehow been near to success but "just missed it" this time.

Blank. Fishing till midnight after a committee meeting. It's early yet, and the Loughor is not an early river, but I couldn't resist the temptation of a moonlit night. Some don't like fishing in a moon, but a full moon means a high tide and this little river has enough kinks in it to shade some of the pools. I caught nothing but a brownie, nor did I see or hear anything, but a member took a 7 pounder spinning high water earlier in the week.
