Had a great day on the river, very hard conditions, hot and very bright sun. No fish rising, a few large dark olives hatching.
Sadly no fish.

A day to remember on a simply magnificent stretch of the Usk.

We booked three rods, two via the WUF and one direct from Penpont House when we arrived at the venue. The beat is a fantastic mix of gutters, riffles, deep pools, and flats. Unfortunately, a very strong upstream wind and bright sunshine meant dry fly wasn't an option for us. Despite a decent hatch, we only saw one fish rise all day, so we stuck to nymphing and spiders in the faster runs and pocket water, which proved very productive. We landed 9 fish between us and lost a few more. The fish seemed to switch off during the afternoon meaning we caught nothing after 2pm.

Most of the fish we landed were around the 1lb mark, with two beautiful Usk specimens probably just over 2lbs, which made our day. Our first time on the Usk and it most certainly won't be our last!

Lovely water, fished the fly beautifully. Not fish seen and no offers. Shame to see such a great river in this way with a lack of fish that it once had!

Ghillie and owner very helpful in giving advice on beat etc. Will return again.

It was 1’3” on the Llanstephan gauge today, not much point in getting the double hander out, but the temperature increase got the trout interested at last.
Very few rising fish, no terrestrials seen apart from Grannom. No juveniles in the total, not surprising perhaps with the number of goosanders on the beat today albeit without squads of chicks to feed yet. All fish caught on a team of wets and nymphs throughout the beat, with two pushing the 2lb mark, and all quickly returned. I was going to fish some streamers for a while around dusk, but a soaking after a slip in Dolmeudwy meant an early finish.
Banks in good order, not as overgrown and dangerous as they can be at this time of year.

Arrived at 9:00am and walked beat (First time fishing it). Could not access top of beat from RHS bank above 1/2 way up along the stream. The stream is a fork which runs round the back of the south side of the island in a thick forested area. Bumped into the owner who suggested driving round to LHS, parking near church and walking down. Otherwise FULL access available from RHS bank along entire length permitted. (Would be difficult to fish this beat from LHS as there are only two gaps in the tree line with no bank, the upper section to the north side of the island and a gap opposite the beat end ditch RHS on the lower section.
Around 10:30am, having tackled up and moved onto the river, the fish had started rising to a sudden hatch of March Browns. Caught 2 trout immediately on MB dry, one of 1lb and the other at 3/4lb. Larger fish noted on LHS side of river in the deeper water in awkward places - too difficult to reach across from RHS. Around 11:30am, Large Dark Olives started coming off the water, and hooked two more on LDO emerger, but unfortunately they came off the hook. Another brief burst of March Browns followed but this time the fish weren't interested in them. The number of rising fish dwindled, with just odd sporadic rise through to 2:00pm. By 3:00pm the strong bright sunlight had taken hold of the river and surface activity ceased. Temp check 21C. Didn't try nymphs as dries had made a good day of it. Left water to return home at 4:30pm.

Had a pleasant day out. Three trout on worm, plus lots of finicky bites. Water was still cold and I'd expect more action as it warms up.

Took my daughter fishing for the first time, she loved it. Caught 6 love rainbows, 4 of which were almost 1lb heaver than the usual stocked fish size. Used the usual ledger and worm method used on this reservoir with 6 fish caught in total. All 6 fish were in really good condition and were taken to eat.
