Fished the stretch through Merthyr Town from Rhydycar up to Brecon Road with a friend today. Strong winds but lots of LDO's and Brook Dunns on the water with trout feeding happily. Caught several fish each, all on dry fly patterns up to 2lb. All the fish were wild (No stockies).

12 Trout

I made the mistake of booking a days fishing without taking time to familiarise myself with the river and therefore did not get the most of the day.
With so much river to choose from, I did not know where to start and finding where to start was the real problem. There seemed to be only 3-4 places where you could access the river and I failed to find a spot where I felt able to "set off from". I realise this is my own fault and would welcome suggestions from anglers more used to this beat.
The bits of water I did see were clear, although sadly lots of litter and abandoned bikes etc as previously mentioned.
Some small fish seemed to be feeding happily in the sunny conditions, but this was on the edge of a trading estate, so I gave that spot a miss.
For the price and with the knowledge, this could represent some great value fun fishing.

A few small wild fish and FAR too many stock fish. Lots of evidence of poaching and pollution. Quite dissapointing.

30 Trout

Fished the Taff today. Plenty of ldo's and brook dunns on the water to feed on so fished a quilled emerger. Managed to catch fish up to 2 1/2lb.

7 Trout

Loads of fish caught all day up to 2lbs in some decent water. Shame they were mainly very poor quality stocked fish though, lots of fins missing and rubbed ddown tails. With the number of juvenile wild fish in the tribs there is no reason to be filling the river with these ugly things.

20 Trout

Fished for a couple of hours to 11.30am. Cold and windy, nothing moving. Tried upstream nymphing for nil.

Both fish around the 2lb mark.

2 Trout

Fished the water above Abercanaid today. Plenty of fly life on the water i.e large dark olives brooks dunns and the odd march brown. Plenty of fish rising big and small and managed to catch fish up to 2 1/2lb

Nice stretch of river, could do with a serious clean up. All the trout stocked fish around the pound mark, and caught on dry. Nice hatch of fly. Looked like Ldo and some olive upwrights.

Interesting stretch of river. I fished the Merthyr stretch near the retail park, its lovely water. Around 2pm there was a good few Ldo and olive uprights, found a nice pool with one or two fish taking flies. I had three and lost a couple, all browns around the pound mark, all stocky's.
It would be good to have a clean up on this stretch there is a lot of rubbish all along the river.
