Leaving London by car on a Bank Holiday weekend proved to be a disaster with much of the day spent in gridlocked traffic on the M25 and M4. We eventually arrived just after 5.30pm and had about an hour and a half to spare. Pleasant looking beat, gorgeous looking farm house. I have never had much success in the evenings on any river (in the period after the sun goes down behind the hills) so I was a little anxious... heightened by an almost complete absence of any surface feeding activity other than a sporadic rise or two, which never seemed to achieve any enthusiastic consistency. There were one or two mayfly about but they were ignored and allowed to drift and lift off gracefully from the water. Two fish hooked: one 'intentionally' on a nymph and the other 'unintentionally' when the fish took a dry at the end of the drift, when it was skating across the current just as I commenced my forward cast - but both were lost. I'll catch the train next year!

Water low and the sun high, but there were plenty of trout moving, easy to spot in the shallow water. They were taking too in the more rippled areas, particularly in the evening, though I didn't manage to contact any of the better fish. Small PT nymphs and the like worked well. I saw two or three sizable fish with fungus growth on their heads, one looking very sick - should we be worried?

Very hard going all day. Little surface activity despite a bit of a hatch.

Downstream wind tricky as dry fly fishing but small hatches of olives and LBDs keeping trout up in pathches

Fished from 10 am. Good flow and depth to river which was tinged with visibility to about a foot. Sidestreams bringing in coloured water. Rained steadily to about 1200 and then stopped. Mainly buzzers hatching with few uprights Only couple of fish seen and none contacted. Fished upper beat first and then lower. River suddenly and rapidly rose and coloured from about 2pm with debris coming down so fishing ceased.

Hatches not as good as Saturday but enough to keep trout interested.
