Caught one and lost another. Seen a few fish at the middle of the beat but couldn’t convince to bite. Later came back to the same spot to find a cormorant and not a single fish in sight. Hope the fish got away!

River in perfect condition; weather damp and muggy with no wind until late afternoon. Sand martins have started to head for sunnier climes. Fished from 11:00 to 17:30. A dribble of olives coming off throughout the day, peaking between 14:00 and 15:00. Some smaller fish rising in Llanobery Pool but were not interested in my offerings. PTN around the edges of the faster runs also unsuccessful. Retired defeated and frustrated - with only a month to go to the end of the season!

River in perfect condition; sunny periods with a brisk breeze which swung from upstream to downstream over the course of the afternoon. Occasion olive coming off but the martins were high - feeding on terrestrials. Fished from 2pm. PTN on the edge of the fast water. Tried the pools but no sign of any activity. Two fish in rapid succession from the top of the beat

0930-15:30 . An upstream wind seemed to put paid to any hatch, using a duo of nymphs in certain sections but to no avail. 3 x wbt to net on the flats in the last 45 mins, 8,10 & 13 ins. A beautiful beat nonetheless.

Spotted 2x 1lb to 2lb trout from the bank directly in front of the access gate. Lost sight before chance to cast.

1xsmall on a nymph.

Missed four takes but succeeded on the fifth with a dry. Gorgeous 10” brownie and blessed with sunshine if a bit windy.

River height perfect (showing 8” on Brecon gauge) and running gin clear. Sunny with a brisk upstream breeze. Fished from 2pm. No surface activity until 4pm when olives hatched profusely and fish began to rise. Fished olive CDC in the upper pool. Every cast was to a rising fish until 5:30. Three WBT to the net, dropped a couple more and missed many takes. Great fun!

Arrived at 15:00 to find the river running high and coloured. Must have been overnight rain as the Brecon gauge was below 12” on the previous evening. Tungsten bead nymphs in the deeper slower water was the tactic of the day. Left defeated at 19:30

A most enjoyable first visit to Abercynrig. We booked salmon rods as a hedge against the rain rather than real expectation of a fish. The river was at about 10" on the Brecon gauge when we arrived and looked in perfect condition. Karen opened with a fabulous 1.5lb trout on a small duo-fished killer bug. I took a switch rod and optimistically tried likely looking runs with small salmon flies, catching another 1.5lb trout from bottom pool. Karen's other trout came to a cdc emerger and my other two to cdc dries. Not much surface activity seen during the day but clearly a good number of fish there. Frustratingly, I hooked what I was sure was a big trout on a small Munro variant in the Cynrig pool, bullied it towards me for a quick release and then realised it was a coloured hen grilse of about 4-5lbs just as the hook came free . . . . I'll be more careful next time. Will definitely return.
