First trip out this season - Usk looking beautiful and Penpont as lovely a setting as always. River was clear - trickle of large olives (but not very dark!) and brook duns until the middle of the afternoon when we had a rain squall which dropped the temperature several degrees and put things back to winter mode.
Fish spooky in the bright conditions - fished dries all day as is our wont, managed two wbt of 9 and 13 inches on para ginger quills, two other better fish were lost, 1 to long distance C&R and another big fish which smashed the tippet at the first lunge.
Thanks to Chris in the office for helping with booking - we left it until the morning as rain was forecast the previous night - but it didn't materialise!
The spookiness of the fish was probably exacerbated by their being fished the previous two days. I wonder if there is any way the web bookings could be amended so it is possible to see recent bookings? Would help with making an informed choice when selecting a beat - catch returns often don't appear for a couple of days afterwards (case in point! Sorry)

Much cooler windier day than the day before. Still a few mayfly present, but I continued with the beaded nymphs. Lost two fish, netted one - about 8 inches.

Low water, clear and cool downstream wind. Nothing all day despite varying methods and using 12-15ft leaders to 3lb. trickle of olives but nothing rising to take.

Warm conditions - some mayfly hatching, but generally very few rising fish. No joy with spiders, so reverted to beaded nymphs which took all three fish - around the 6-8 inches mark.

Although the river level was near perfect a cold wind made fishing quite difficult. There was little sign of fly life and no sign at all of any rising fish. One tout of a little under a pound was caught on a GRHE nymph and safely returned. MP & RJ.
