First fly fishing experience on a major Welsh river, the Usk at Penpont. Safe parking on site and v close to fishing..
River, I'm told, was slightly up after some rain in recent days. Occasional rises only. Probably saw no more than half a dozen trout on the half mile of beat I tried to cover. Highlight was targeting and landing one wbt c. 3/4 lb, which fought very well, on Klink and cdc point fly. Aiming to find out more about the best beats on the Usk for larger populations of wbt.

A favorite beat of ours in an unbeatable setting. Lost my first trout within 5 mins and proceeded to lose a further 4 throughout the day (the others experienced the same), Penpont trout are the fattest I've ever seen, no slimmers world around here. Managed to land one, 16'' around the 2lb mark, 2 of the others lost were of a similar size. We left too early, should have waited for the spinners to fall which filled the air. One rod had 3 in 10 mins in the bridge pool just before we left at beer o clock.

I can't comment a lot on the things like river conditions as we were fishing in the river for first time and also we are just beginning anglers. I've caught 1 brown trout on the black nymph just simply let freely it to float by the river current, fish was reacting to the dry fly but no success on this method.
In general it is nice beat there was not a lot of fish movement, personally found it very hard to fish maybe because not used to the rivers and the wild trout but its very nice beat surrounded with beautiful nature.
My strong advice is before you decide which beat to book is to read Wye & Usk Foundation Fishing Reports.

The river was low and clear, there was a good mix of fly coming off by no real specific hatch or rise, Black knat was probably the most prolific fly. Picked up 3 fish, not easy fishing but a very rewarding day in a beautiful part of the world.

Very nice location but very low water levels made finding fish difficult. We managed 5 trout during the day, each 10-12 inch in size. No visible rise at all but one fish fell to a small dry and the other 3 to small nymphs fished as deep as we could get them.
