Exciting days fishing on this beautiful stretch of river with 8 WBT caught up 16 inches, and many more missed. Fish were taken on a variety of dries and nymphs. Excellent evening rise provided great sport, and saw/heard several large sea trout.

First of 4 days on the Usk with my son. Unfortunately, he blanked today. I took 2 WBT, lost 4 with one managing to dislodge the hook by jumping out of the water like a cruise missile. Neither of us have a great deal of experience, so we put it down to that. This is an amazing fishery in a stunning location and we had a great day. Would have been nice to see a few more trout rising, but it was a bright sunny day, which was maybe the reason for that. Thank you WUF for making places like this possible.

Had a lovely day on a stunning beat but unfortunately failed to connect with any fish. Hatches were sporadic and we have the feeling we missed the best of it whilst away from the water having a pub lunch! Chilly downstream wind and cold overnight is our only real explanation to the blank. Surprised to have to have touched nothing even on the nymph. The fish were definitely there so maybe we just weren't good enough!

Having been beaten by the high flows the day before at Cwmwysg Ganol, it was a pleasure to see the river had dropped substantially overnight, and continued to drop through the day. A warmer day saw Penpont at nearly optimum conditions - a good flow of water, light wind, warm air. All these combine to bring the hatches on, and as seems to be the case every year, free rising fish.
Would recommend the lower end of the beat - despite camp sites next to the river, there are fish to be caught there.
Penpont is a dry fly heaven if your casting is accurate, and there are fish to be had all along the beat, especially in the glides. There are also fish to be had above the bridge on both sides, but wading in anything other than summer flows is risky - it is deeper that it looks. If you fancy an adventure, take a walk upstream; a very different river.
Penpont is imho the easiest beat on the Usk for wading, and rewards a stealthy approach. It is also a magnificent place to visit, and the scenery alone is well worth the fishing fee. We camped overnight on the banks of the river. The proprietors have gone to great trouble to ensure well-appointed and clean facilities.
On this occasion, I landed 4 brown trout to 14 inches, and lost 4 others, all on a size 14 brown pheasant tail dry. My companion, a beginner, pricked a few but couldn't land any. These fish give a great account of themselves - I call them the Penpont Airborne Division. There are bigger fish in this beat, and on the right day, they will oblige with great memories of 'Penpont Porkers' taken and lost.

Rainy start to the day but cleared a bit by mid morning, level showing 1'4" on the brecon gauge. Returned 2 browns both about 11" taken on an olive paradun during one of the sporadic hatches about halfway down the beat. Rain started again late afternoon so headed home. Lovely stretch of river.
