Fished Ty-Newydd on way back from fishing tour of South and Mid Wales. Spent the evening before tying 6 para ginger quills in B&B in Aberystwyth as fly box was bereft. Looked a lovely day when we got there - soft overcast but reasonably warm. Patchy hatches throught the day - medium olives and pale wateries - encouraged the fish. Those six flies did their stuff! Shared between the rods 36 fish were enticed and returned - 15 wbt to 15" and 19 grayling - a lot were peas from pod of 8-9" but fish of 14", 2 x 17" and 1 x 19" were the prize catches - but not the biggest fish hooked! A ginger quill was trundling slowly over deep flats when a huge head emerged and gently engulfed it. 3 or 4 kicks with the rod bent double at long distance and the tippet parted - estimates suggest a wbt of at least 3lb! If anyone catches this monster can I have the fly back pleae?

Caught 20ish wbt & grayling on PTN's & small dries all on the small side up to 8inches but great fun. No sign of any salmon moving but stunning beat and excellent day out. Not sure I like standing on the planks!!

Weather and conditions: cool (10 to 15 degrees C), blustery, rain shows (some quite heavy), bright spells. Intermittent and rather nasty downstream wind most of the day. River a good height with very slight colour. Nothing hatching and no rises seen until 6pm. Eleven trout, mostly 10 to 12 inches, plus several trout parr. Four grayling, best c. ¾ lb. Fifteen fish in total. Most taken on deep nymph (gold-head GRHE) and caddis (two fly cast), a few on Adams (14) in quiet water. Conditions not great but still a very enjoyable days fishing. It all looked very dour but the fish were there. Failed to find any of those big grayling pods that are often on this beat. Several salmon seen moving through the rocky area (the spouts) at the lower end of the beat. One of my favourite places to fish. Stayed at Gromain Cottage (many thanks to Ally and Dave who always make us welcome) and had a great feed and a nice pint at the Wheelright’s Arms.

Sunshine and cloud, river clear with plenty of water.
13 wbt (5" to a handsome specimen of 14") and 3 grayling (9" - 12") all safely returned. Not a day for the dry fly aficionado with very few fish rising. Although the big brownie did take an emerger pattern. I have fished this beat on many occasions and it reveals another secret time and time again. I think it's quite daunting for the less experienced angler but the more you work it out the better it gets. GRHE (sorry I know that's a really unimaginative pattern) was undoubtedy the fly of the day, fished on the point with a Spider dropper and was deadly at the tail of some of the deeper pools.
Really pleased to end my last trip of the season on such a high. Thank you as ever to WUF for making this quality of fishing accessible to all.

No salmon caught or seen. One salmon of about 10 lb hooked at Cillaiu Falls at 7.30pm, giving a good fight until shaking off the hook just before reaching the net. Strangely, the river began to rise suddenly at about the same time, probably due to a release from Elan. Full sun all day.
