Wow, she was hard going today!!! An old favourite and pretty local to me .... Temperature dipped stream, reading 13 degrees ... Twas only really the pools that I targeted with tiny dries....
Tough fishing ... in the Elan outflow for a couple of days this week that'll be good, usually some decent fish futher down its short journey before it meets the Wye. Dont forget the Claerwen river is fun too folks... not for the faint hearted, its mountain goat stuff, but bursting with small pretty brownies.... great fun too !!!
Anyway, dry fly tactics as always... and to be honest its all you can use, average depth must be eight inches, if that ... cold though, do thats a bonus !!!
Managed five, all from pool heads .. lovely savage takes too ..... Another two were on and off, a very brief contact..
I fished from eleven till half two ...A chilled but I suppose frustrating session... The Edw seems gloomy and lifeless when she's so low ... oh well, Afon Elan, Claerwen and mountain llyns later this week ....ohhhhhhh and rain next week.... Hallelujah!!!!!!

Did not have a bite, the river is too low and clear. I walked the whole beat, only 1 swim was semi fishable.

Fished between Widdy Bank and Cronkley bridge, had 7 brownies up to 10" and lost a fair few on nymphs and drys. Quite a few fish rising in the flats despite a chilly downstream wind. Very enjoyable the scenery is worth the ticket price alone.

Beat:Doldowlod
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Decided to move a bit further downstream from my usual haunts, and give Doldowlod a long overdue visit, as I last fished the beat almost exactly seven years ago. Since then, two new knees and a dodgy back made my afternoon session below and along The Channels “interesting” – most of the time, it felt like I was having to concentrate more on the need to stay vertical than fishing! However, as in the morning and evening on the upper part of the beat, rising and non-rising fish were willing to take a #16 Hare’s Fur emerger and #14 grizzle EH caddis. Little need nor desire to plumb the depths today. As in the last two months on the upper river, there was little fly: a few pale wateries, plus some midge and sedge. The grayling ranged from 11-16”, with the 12-13” year-class the most prolific - three fat 16” fish of 1.5-1.75lb were the best of the day. The trout were 9-12”. With water temperatures of 15-17 degrees, all fish were safely returned. Nice to be back on this lovely beat, though increasingly challenging for old men. Use it or lose it!
