Fished for about an hour or so from a couple of gaps in the trees. Looked a very nice fishery , perhaps best tackled with the fly when the water level is a bit lower.

when i first came here several years ago the river was low and i loved it. but the last 4 times ive booked it the river has been in flood ! ( this time only 4" above the boards ) well im here now so i`ll give it a go, there are a few spots you can fish when the water is up ( mostly beach type swims ) and even though i couldnt find any grayling about, the trout seemed happy to feed. the water cleared out a bit as the day went on but it didnt go down any. oos trout to 12" all caught on nymphs , and i lost a couple of fish maybe they grayling , who knows!

Calm and sunny all day but where was the fly life? The gravels at the bottom of this beat usually produce plenty of PWs and sedges at this time of year, accompanied by rising fish, but they were all few and far between this afternoon, and little else apart from midge either. I saw some PWs coming off as I ate a sandwich early afternoon, and watched fish rise to ecloding nymphs but often also missing them, as a PW popped out! I love seeing that. They proved to be 6" graylets - good luck children! Interested to see that JJ of Stourbridge saw lots of fly life today, just upstream at Abernant. Wierd eh? I had fish at various places on the beat on a Duracel variant and pick shrimp, and risers and non-risers on a HE emerger and HE Ducks Dun, Grayling Steel Blue and a grizzle Elk. Nothing bigger than 12" today plus lots of salmon parr.

Great days fishing, a bit bright throughout the mid part of the day and the fishing slowed right down, started to pick up again as the evening drew in. Trout were making small flies of the surface, missed a few takes and three fish didn’t make the net.
Greyling took a plain pheasant tail nymph right on the end of a drift.

Lovely beat. Water lower and clearer than yesterday. Fish only took flies with a splash of pink for much of the day. Red hot spider seemingly the fly of choice later on. 4 of the grayling a decent size. All trout small or smallish. All safely returned. Two anglers kindly let me have the lower beat for the last hour. Much appreciated.

The previous days rain saw the river higher, swifter and with more colour than during my visit the evening before. The river was certainly fishable but presented a totally different challenge. After two hours prospecting to no avail with a variety of techniques I tried a size 16 Blonde Wulff. This earned me four small Chubb, a new Ty-Newydd experience for me. As the afternoon wore on I had plenty of success with a Jonathan Barnes Black Magic nymph, standing in the middle of Ciliau Run fishing across and down either side. Eight trout, mostly small with two requiring use of the net. Quite a few fish wriggled off, more difficult to set the hook fishing that way I find.
