Last day of our trip & we were determined to fish despite the river being in the fields when we arrived, fished the field below the parking space until 2pm & caught 2 Barbel, when the water had receded enough to safely access the top swims we moved & managed to catch 11 more Barbel to just under 8lbs, many thanks to WUF for another seasons fishing on wonderful Wye.

We had a great day on Thomas Wood despite our fears with the very high water levels. The river was around 3.5m at Ross, though falling, the field was partially flooded and we had to walk/wade to our swims. We managed to find a few areas with slightly steadier water close in, however it was still torrential and chocolate brown. We all fished feeder or bomb meat or pellets. We had 20 barbel between us in the day, the biggest going 9lb 8oz with a good average size around 7lb.

Although the river was running through very fast, it was a glorious day. We tried the swims (about 4 fishable) in the woods in the morning without any joy. Moving into the fields we worked our way down exploring any slack areas and around 3.45 had our first catch (an eel) then 15 minutes later my friends rod hooped round and he was rewarded with a barbel of 9lb 10oz, in superb condition. One friend had to leave so we carried on until 6pm without any further bites. Not a day for numbers but that one barbel was the topping on a great day.

We had been advised to leave the adjacent fishery the day before, due to flooding, and a forecast of another meter of water expected, so decided not to fish
