Good access to the river, and lots of varied water throughout the stretch. Overcast for a good part of the day, with a brisk downstream breeze, and reasonably low water allowed us to fish through most sections of the beat. Little activity on the surface, so we persevered with nymphs and spider patterns, managing to secure some healthy trout and a good grayling - all safely returned. Certainly a beat we will visit again.

Fishing for trout, conditions perfect. Nice height, caught two half pound brownies on a grey duster and one trout on a hawthorn fly. Hardly anything on the water surface, earlier part of the day they took absolutely and voraciously, afternoon they were snatching but not keeping. Not many trout taking on the surface that we could see. Nice, quiet beat and good fun to fish.
Was slightly alarmed by a chap climbing over the gate with a toilet roll under his arm heading off into the woods to do his business.

I did not fish. The rain promised did not arrive. Water too low and warm and it would distress the fish.

We arrived at around 11:00 to find two young lads fishing at the bottom of the beat, in fact on the boundary with the lower beat (Gromain?). We asked if they had had any success and, whilst they replied, they appeared to be a bit coy. We did not challenge them as this is a 5 rod beat and in theory they could have booked their slots; it was notable that they were gone pretty soon after we arrived. Also on arrival we spotted a canoe towards the far bank travelling downstream. Our discussions with the young lads meant that we did not challenge the canoeist (retrospectively we guessed that the low water levels meant that the gauge at Llanstephan would not be above the red line, but could not be sure).
Fishing was tough but we did manage to catch 7 small (6" or smaller) trout towards the bottom of the beat, all on winged olive dries. There were long periods of no surface activity at all and then sudden bursts of rises for about 10 minutes. Very few hatches were evident. Two further slightly larger (8-10") trout followed and one nice grayling around 12" long. The water level is very low which made wading quite easy but fishing challenging.

Fished around Erwood Pool and Gravely Pool. All small fish and safely returned. Nymph and dry fly used. Most caught by the expert amongst us but 15 yr old Will (new to fishing) caught his first fish.

It's official. The weather forecast is CRAP!! I booked today as there was the promise of some rain at least. Whilst I wasn't expecting a spate, I'd thought the 'thundery rain' promised in the Wye catchment, would raise the water a bit and create some excitement. How wrong I was! There was the merest drizzle for about 5 minutes.
Having said that, there was a moderate showing of fish, in particular the trout that were leaping about, but sadly no larger cousins.
I did however catch a shad. A fine fish of about 1 1/2 lbs. I've had encounters with them before and seen several in the Wye. Photo attached.

River low. Only fished two hours due to holiday commitments. First time I have fly fished for 20 years - I am more at home with bream & roach on Norfolk Broads. Nevertheless, had a nice chub of around 4lb on a weighted black & green nymph and a grayling of 12oz on a fly which I can only describe as pink & white (sorry I do not know the name). I wish we had a river like this in my native Suffolk.
