It's been a very cool and cloudy day. There was some fly activity during the afternoon and some small trout were rising. I caught a sea trout - which leapt about vigorously... and got off!

I did not fish. The river was in spate and pretty cloudy. It did recover but too late to make the journey.

The river was dropping and claering a bit by the evening so I fished for a couple of hours. Notning on nymphs and a single missed take on a parachute adams. Lovely stretch of river.

We returned to this beat full of hope as usual the fish made fools of us.
Fly life was light after Tuesday, some small brownies and one 1.5 lb old grayling was the largest of the fish caught, again all on nymphs.

I’d fished Ty Newydd on Monday. Twenty four hours of showers made quite a difference. The river was flowing more swiftly and carrying some colour but perfectly fishable. Started mid afternoon with almost nothing showing on the surface . Went through the normal repertoire of nymphs, duo and spiders with no success. Whilst taking a break by the hut I saw one fish feeding close to the boards. Tied on a tiny Griffiths Gnat which was immediately taken. The same fly consistently brought trout to the surface in the wide flats at the bottom of the beat. Seven came to the net, all excellent fish up to a pound and a half. Numerous refusals and one or two “self released”. The sort of evening I dream of but rarely happens.

The Sussex gang arrived 5 strong. One was a wye virgin so we organized Jonathan Morris to guide him.what a teriffic job he did, enabling our newbie to catch the biggest brownie of the day at 15ins.The rest of us just catching tiddlers.
It was also very encouraging to see such a great mixture of fly life.
Very different to some of our southern rivers where the hatches can be sparse.
The number of salmon parr was also very encouraging, roll on 3years time.

River in good condition, overcast with an upstream breeze. Fished the afternoon. Mayfly were hatching throughout but largely ignored by the fish. Enough evidence of feeding just below the surface to keep me interested. Six fish caught with several lost. Fishing duo style at one stage I managed to connect with two Grayling simultaneously, one to the elk hair dry and one to a black magic nymph. Quite an achievement bringing both to the net successfully!
