A nice warm day with a good enough throughput of water considering the dry week we've had for some not-too-serious trout fishing. Took a number of small fish and one decent sized grayling (0.5 lbs) although after years of fishing WUF, it has only just occurred to me that other people might be including these tiddlers in their catch returns (as I have done here) so perhaps I shouldn't feel so bad about not coming away from the Wye with monster fish to report as yet.!

Over lunch, I got chatting to someone in the pub who told me he used to fish 'after dark' on this stretch about 30 years ago and revelled in recalling a bag of 6 large Salmon he'd taken on a gaff (?), which he sold later on to a Cardiff restaurant. This only reinforces the importance of organisations like the WUF and their work to protect our river wildlife.

Still no sign of salmon on this beat. Perhaps it needs a few days of heavy rain to get them to hang around. But it was a lovely day and I had some fun in the evening with my trout rod.

Fished all the way down from Armies Pool to the Spring Pool Gutter @ Gromain, water was dropping at the start, rising at the end. Was a last chance to get in on the action of this latest water, next stop Ireland in a few days - good luck to all those out this week, will be watching the catch returns!

Covered those pools still fishable with the fly with no takers & nothing seen.Reverted to trout rod afterwards as there was pretty constant movement to emerging nymphs all day.One reasonable grayling. Was never going to be a battery recharging day :lost my wallet on the way over which I only discovered at the garage after filling the truck up with diesel.Fortunately some very kind & honest person handed it in at the last place I'd stopped. After arriving slightly later than anticipated I promptly fell/slid down a rock whilst wading & filled my waders!Still would'nt want to be anywhere else on a day off! Thanks WUF for the opportunities.

So tried again, on my own, some of the techniques I'd learnt yesterday and not very successfully initially. Switched to clink and dink but the fishing gods were having none of it. Then tried some indicator nymph fishing and took a frisky brown.
Fished the fast water at the top of the beat using the indicator method in the late afternoon. Picked up 4 salmon parr and a nice grayling. Hard work and hard wading. Missed loads of takes. Water depth varies so much with rocky bottom, getting snagged was a regular event, but the fish were there. Managed not to fall over which was a feat in itself. Much more exhausting than my usual fishing. However previously I wouldn't have attempted wading that sort of water. I guess I just need more practice.
