1 Trout

Not the warmest of April days. Allocated the top beat in the morning. I must admit I find the very deep gutters and pools on this stretch difficult to fish unless fish are on the surface, which they weren’t. However, there is a nice riffle at the top which can provide a good couple of hours fishing, usually productive, but not on this occasion.
Switched to the bottom beat around 2 ish, caught an 8oz fish, followed by a 12oz fish, both in the faster water on a gold beaded nymph. Quite cold by now, so thinking about the long drive back to Kent, at which point I hooked a very nice fish 2½ to 3 LB. took me about 20 minutes to get it in. In attempting to carry the fish back out to the faster water to revive it, I slipped on a rock and took a dip. Decided to call it a day.
The odd fly coming off but nothing that could be described as a hatch.

The three of our party enjoyed the beat though cold conditions prevented much success on the more exposed sections. All fish caught on the bottom section by J4F.

Lovely clear wintery day and the water looked in great condition. Pretty clear and flowing well albeit freezing cold whilst wading. Didn't managed to tempt any fish at all and saw nothing moving or rising in the river. There was very little fly-life although there was a hatch of an up-wing fly in the afternoon but very few. Still had a nice day by the river which beats being in the office.

Lovely day's fishing with almost exactly the same result as when we fished this beat last year - a good-sized and fairly fresh hen salmon at about 6pm. It was caught on an ally's shrimp or something resembling that and was about 8lbs. River level was very low and things had not look promising in the morning. However, we started catching trout in the afternoon and then the Salmon at the end of the day in one of the pools at the bottom of the beat. The river is very well-mainatined here and particularly beautiful. Good pie at lunchtime in the Nantyffin pub down the road too.

Early mist turning to bright sunshine. Small trout bit at daddy long legs on 4th cast. Never saw another rise on the river all day. Beautiful setting. Lower beats difficult to find. On arrival you have to call the office to open the gate (instuctions say they will open).

The river came up a couple of inches, not enough to get the salmon moving. River still at summer levels.

Very low water so we chased trout rather than salmon as planned but even they were very reluctant....or we were very innefficient! Instructor Chris Price was helpful and instructive so at least our casting has improved. The Cottage of Content at Carey was quite outstanding so should definitely be on any list of recommended pubs. Good conditions with the river falling and clearing after a large spate but no sign of any salmon. Some wondeful trout fishing below the bridge in the evening.
