Managed a couple of chub of average size in low water conditions and what appeared to be an algae bloom making the water a bit cloudy and possibly put the barbel off feeding. Packed up mid afternoon when about 15 canoes decided to
enjoy the lovely weather right where i was fishing but it was not unexpected. As always its still a nice day out on the Wye.

Great stretch of river with loads of potential, lots of likely looking fishable swims even though only a fairly short beat (feels much shorter as you can park at the midpoint). Great to fish a stretch where ALL the bank is fishable and every spot looks good. Lots of options to fish float, feeder or roll meat. Glynn the ghillie is a legend; he met us down there first thing and gave loads of useful advice and insight, obviously knows the stretch inside out and told many tales of fish caught to whet our appetites for the day! He even minded the rods whilst we popped back to the campsite (Lucksall, 44secs drive from the beat) to get something we forgot.
Plenty of chub (15 good ones 3lb+, 6 chublets) hitting the feeder almost as soon as it touched down from the lower, faster swims, but only two barbel slipped up. One at lunchtime, one in the evening. Standard pellet feeder tactics. I feel like you could clean up with chub fishing caster on the float. 3 of the chub were hugely long fish but only 4lbish, I reckon they would be 6 nudging 7 in the winter. Pristine every one of them.
Despite the few barbell caught it was a very enjoyable start to the season. I would definitely book this beat again but take the 'pin and float rod next time!

Booked on behalf of a French visitor. Left him in the capable hands of Ghillie Glyn. A very warm bright day meant the salmon sport was non existent, but my French friend left thoroughly enthralled by his visit to the Wye.

Really well maintained fishery by Glynn the full time Ghillie who was also very helpful with advice before arriving and all day while fishing. It was a significant privilege to share the beat with the owner that day who was also fishing but most generously he let the ghillie show me around and stay with me most of the day! Good hut, toilet and tea making facilities and even a glass of wine was offered at lunch!
Seems a short beat at the advertised double bank 800m or so but at 0.75m (Bredwardine) it was mostly all fly fishable, much off cribbs and walk ways etc (perhaps not for everyone) but Oxford run (from the bank) is class and poachers pool which needs wading after the croys is just a gorgeous spring fly pool. There's also a lovely little 50m run down to the swirly Lugg junction pool etc and several other little bits to keep it interesting with a spinner.
At this height and fishing only 2 rods, its probably as generous fly fishing beat as any I have fished on the river (12 different beats) and with 7 big springers to date over the few fishable days this year - is it the top beat? But probably by far if you consider the number of rods fishing it.
I like to express my sincere gratitude to an amazingly generous beat owner for opening up a productive and very interesting bit of river through the WUF . It says a lot if I explain he was delighted to watch his ghillie net a 17lb springer for me from poachers pool as he was following me down the pool. Thank you all!

As expected river up but dropping nicely and being above the Lugg it was a good color. Great to have the ghillie waiting with an open gate, freshly mown grass and immaculate beat complete with top of the range fishing hut. - My guest was very impressed.
Glyn is a cracking guide to the water and I quickly latched into a Springer at my feet witnessing the whole thing in great detail on one of Glyns FC's.
This is a very welcoming and highly fish-able beat and I highly recommend. Shame my fish came off. Cant wait to book again. Fish were in evidence in the morning and I imagine next week will be prime time...
