Felt a bit chilly when I arrived and found the river a tiny bit cloudy with a slight chill (result of yesterdays rain?} Only one half hearted rise seen and the very occasional yellow may seen coming off

Just a little kick in the water level, and a little colour too, from Tuesday's rain made me hopeful. Lots of flies in the air as well. But there weren't many fish showing. First time on this beat, and I'll be back again, if only to learn where the best access points are to some very attractive water. Caught two trout on downstream nymph.

Bright hot day, light breeze. Trout caught in fast riffles, or just under tree foliage close to bank (euro nymph PTN). 4 caught, lost 3. One lost on dry mayfly in evening but little in the way of a rise. Mixture of flies hatching but not in any great number in the pool I was fishing. River is very low and clear.

A wonderful day out with my friend J.F. 4 fish to the net, with rising fish to be targeted all day. 3 on yellow may emerger (hatching off throughout the day) and 1 to a waltz worm euronymphing. All fish in perfect condition, the largest 1.5-2lbs.
A great day out and JFs first experience of a McDonald’s drive thru which is notable.

This is a lovely long beat with a real variety of water. Wasn't expecting too much as it was quite hot, very sunny and low water conditions, but the day started really well with four fish by early afternoon - three of them nice ones too of 14-15". Three on nymph, but another to a Parachute Yellow May dun. Some decent hatches of yellow mays, small olives, and even a smattering of mayfly but the trout hadn't switched on to the latter yet. The dippers and yellow wagtails were having a field day though. The odd fish rising and taking but they were a bit more subdued due to the weather I guess. The second half of the day became a bit of a carnival really with loads of people on the river, even though I avoided the central town bit - three other trout fishermen, swimmers, a flotilla of boys in rubber rings, an inflatable dinghy, an air mattress plus swimmers, parties on the banks. dogs jumpong in and out etc. - although I'm not sure if the trout minded too much, I guess they are fairly used to it all. I was a bit unlucky in that five more fish came off the hook - but a lot of it became very technical with large pods of small fish around the church rising to really tiny stuff, don't think I really found quite the right fly either despite going down to tiny 20s. The low water with little flow also made presentation more difficult, but it was absorbing fishing. Lovely beat - think I may avoid a sunny Sunday next time though just for a little more peace and quiet, although great to see many other folks enjoy and value the Usk besides us flyfishers!
