three hours on a new beat to me. Yes the access is a bit of a pain as there is lots of getting in and out when confronted by water too deep to wade and then having to often back track to an exit point. However that is to be expected on the Monnow. It is essential to have studded waders to negotiate the banks which are hazardous after rain. As for the fishing not much fly life but that was to be expected perhaps during the middle of the day. Two nice fish fell to medium olives and another lost.

An excellently-maintained beat, with yellow posts at all the access points along the bank and paths cut through the undergrowth. But in spite of lots of fly, I hardy saw a rise and never touched a fish. I was hoping to stay for the evening rise, but the forecast of cloudy and cool proved wrong, and the afternoon was hot, so by 6 I was exhausted and gave up.

Good day on the water. Fish rising to Mayfly and Alder flies. Access to the river was tough to say the least. Even though the description says that handrails and ladders have been fitted, we didn't see any.

Fished for 2 hours in the morning. Beautiful beat, although very deep in places and wading is not always possible due to depth. Had 4 takes and 1 wbt on an iron blue dun pattern, around 1lb in weight.

Lovely day teaching my father in law to fly fish, certainly a stretching task for a beginner
Mid afternoon rise brought a small fish to hand and then fished through to the 8pm. Had a lovely and very lively 1.5lb trout at about 7:30 on a smallish mayfly pattern 2hich was a treat
Good day considering I didn't fish for much of it as I was guiding a novice!
Saw a number of Danica and plenty of other fly life so heartening in that respect.

9 x trout 10-13 inches, Monnow Gosling, Mohican Mayfly. Actually a quieter river than I expected with no really big hatch of any kind this afternoon. However, the odd mayfly dun was on the water and the occasional trout was waiting in ambush. Having something visible to go at is most of the battle, particularly so on this beat.

Raining, lots of mayfly about but no fish rising, went for lunch and never returned!
