A very nice day on this little river! First time fishing anywhere like this and first time wading so I'm happy that I still managed to catch two tiddly browns - 6inches each - the 2nd one zipped off at an amazing pace for such a little guy!

There were lots of big black hawthorns around where I parked up, but not so many at the water. Access was a little tricky in some areas, but there was still plenty fishable. Water was quite murky due to rain at the weekend. I blanked on trying nymphs (probably bad technique!) but when I did find fish rising little dries worked well - strangely very little of an evening rise despite quite a lot of insect life. There were insects that maybe were mayflies - they certainly acted like them.

Oh and I found two poachers near the top of the beat! Reported them to WUF once I was back in phone signal.

Cold day. 11 small fish largest 1/2 pound, mainly on klinkhammers. 1 fish just under a pound on a pheasant tail nymph. Caught one 4 ounce fish with a nymph in scissors and 5 feet of nylon. How this ever managed to break someone I have no idea, but it was his lucky day.

Nothing hatching, nothing rising, nothing cought. Incompetence shone through today!!
A lovely place to pass a day nevertheless.

Weather was beautiful, but the water was really rather high and fast moving. Didn´t see anything move all morning. Then in early afternoon had a few knocks on goldhead nymphs and finally took a 1lb trout. In the evening a tiny grayling and another even tinier brown were caught. Great day, but can´t wait to come back at slightly lower, warmer water with more flies hatching.

Blank. I had planned to trot maggot for grayling, but when I got to my local tackle shop for bait, they had closed. "What's the point being open?" the proprietor said later. "Nobody goes fishing in this weather." A self-fulfilling prophecy if ever I heard one. So I went down with fly rod and lobbed tungsten bugs into a muddy current without result until it began to snow again. I really do think its about time spring arrived.
