A lovely day spent in beautiful surroundings that was worth the fee on its own however landed a nice 20lb Pike as a bonus.

The unseasonally mild weather tempted me into another 'last' trip to MHC. I woke to a 10 degree temperature reading in the car and arrived to find the river at 2.25m and dropping with nice colour to it. Despite the time of year and a number of recent frosts I felt optimistic (a condition I do suffer with).
This had drained out of me after the second swim at the top of the fishery without a bite. A move to the bottom produced a chub pushing 4lb. No further bites but a blank avoided at least.
I moved back up the top to a swim I'd not fished before and had the worm bitten off on the first cast. 2 casts later a proper bite and after hard but short fight a pristine 4lb barbel was on the mat. Not the munter of my dreams but great reward for having a go.

No dice.

River rising and very cold indeed (5-6 degrees c). Also, so much debris, could hardly keep the line in the water for very long without encountering problems. Very challenging conditions.

Beautiful spot though and will be back when its warmer.

Well, the conditions this week were as bad as they were good last week:
Temperatures dropped every night leading up to a frost the morning we fished and clear blue skies. The river was also clear and water must have been released into the river as it came up a half a metre from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon. It was also full of leaves and sticks which came through all day.
So despite fishing 4 swims and trying 2 different feeder approaches and a veritable smorgasboard of hookbaits we managed just one 4lb chub between us. Still nice to be on the bank though ;o)

Tough day. Low and clear overnight frost and clear blue skies was always going to be a struggle. Tried numerous swims one chub about 2lb each on meat. Couldn’t even get bites on maggot

After dropping temperatures and 2 overnight frosts at the weekend we thought that this might be a Wye trip too many this year. However it was mild as we left with a light SW wind, and the level down to 0.45. It was a little clear but not alarmingly so. We thought it was a very low chance of barbel but we should be good for a chub or two.
We started at the top end but after 2 and a half hours neither of us had had a bite using various hookbaits so moved.
This worked and the afternoon session produced 7 chub each (11 of which were over 3lb) and a lovely 9.06 barbel for S.M. My biggest chub was a big pb of 5.14 so well chuffed! He fished gb feeder and meat. I fished a maggot and hemp feeder. A great November day's fishing. Thank you WUF ;o)
The only very slight blight was 2 canoeists moaning like mad at anglers thinking they own the river! Smile and wave boys, smile and wave....

River very low and clear, weather bright sunshine and high pressure! Only had this day to fish, so had to go with it.
A difficult but very enjoyable day in some of the best scenery the UK has to offer.

River perfect, weather terrific, fishing very slow, but a fantastic autumn day. Tried everything but one of those days. A very friendly big white goose like anglers

First time on this beat and had to move around to find the fish. Finally started to catch in the afternoon on meat and lost a barbel due to a hook pull on my final cast. I think this beat would fish well in high water and the swims have been created with this in mind. Compared to some other beats the swims here have been fairly well maintained with steps and ropes, although they are pretty large swims.

It would help if parking was available at the lower end as a long walk with tackle from the parking area at the top. I'm not sure if we even found the lower boundary as we decided that it was just too far to contemplate lugging gear that far down.

Other than that this is a pretty good beat and very remote with a well maintained track that any car could easily cope with.
