Having already booked weeks in advance, I was really looking forward to my first session of the opening week of the new river season. I had chosen a new beat for my first session and i was delighted to say i was not disappointed. The guide maps were a great help and once on the river i could see that the land owner had gone to great lengths to give the angler (in most case where possible) good access the their preferred pegs, including steps dug out of the bank down to the river and rope to those inaccessible spots due the the steeps banks which would be invaluable during very wet conditions.
Having arrived extra early, i was a cool cloudy over cast day, the river was low but had good colour and eagerly rushed to get my first cast into the water, i did not have to wait long for my first chub knock which carried on and kept me busy throughout the day, although i moved a number of times i could not get among my target species of the Barbel.
Chub are in great shape these days my best of six being 5lb 4oz, and eel and a trout, all caught on luncheon meat, pellet and bollie.
Thanks again WUF and the Land Owner for allowing us access to some great fishing on the best river in the UK.

River very low and after very hot days previously we faced a very low river. However with rain forecast all day we thought we may have a couple of barbel. Very slow day with just 2 chub to show for our efforts. We covered the whole stretch but the fish just did not switch on.
Great to see weed on the river bed though

First cast at 05:00 to beat the heat and the canoes. Fished until 11:30 with no nibbles. Tried the faster water just below the car park.
The water extraction motor was turned on at 05:30. There is no much water being extracted, it’s a wonder there is any left in the river!

It was good to be back on the river again. I was full of anticipation, dampened by the knowledge that chemicals and chicken effluent have striven the salmon population and that I was unlikely to catch. The river was running a little high and the water coloured but, that said, the pools were all easily accessible, although somewhat more difficult to egress with the slippery Wye mud rendering studs near-useless! No sign of any salmon but lots of kingfishers darting up and down the river and red kites circling on the thermals overhead. All in all a most enjoyable day but, alas, no fish.

Having been at 0.89m on Saturday the river had risen again to 1.45m by the time we arrived, with 6 inch vis, but was just starting to fall. 3 of the group arrived early and fished swims at the top, I arrived just before lunch and fished down the bottom. Beautiful day, sunny for the most part, with 8.9 degree water temp. We all caught barbel (two had 1, one had 2, and the other one a fab 5, between 5lb and 7.04). The chub was 2lb and the other a gudgeon! All fished predominantly gb feeders with meat and pellet in and an assortment of hookbaits - meat, big flavoured pellets, small boillies. PJ had his first 2 Wye barbel, Mr P (that’s what we call him) had the 5 having only caught one in his last 5 Wye trips. A lovely end to the season fishing with great mates and only 106 days until I go back!

Only x4 chub between two of us, lost one barbel. Walked the entire stretch and fished multiple swims. A tough day.

River was a good level, sadly it hammered it down all day and got soaked. But had a few fish. Stefan popped by and gave a great deal of good advice. Good day all round
