Drove across the field towards the smoke from the infamous pump at 1300. The area adjacent and upstream was being strimmed and I was allowed to drive up the bank to the top of the beat to find a quieter spot. There are accessible swims and I fished meat with a feeder until 17.00. The only catch was a very big eel.
AT 17.00 I decided to chance the area around the extractor. The noise is bearable but being upwind of the fumes is rather unpleasant. Three good chub (around 4lb) were landed on pellet but not until after 19.30 when the pump was switched off. Two barbel of similar weight to the chub were lost in the shallows just in front of my net.(River very low and clear) This is an idyllic spot when it is silent and the number of salmon leaping and the abundant wildlife remind you why you fish the Wye.

A complete blank on day one. The water was very clear and you could see the bottom across most of the river. I tried baiting several spots and found no fish. Martin lost a chub of about 4lb at the net.
I have to say that when I arrived at 09.30 there where 9 other anglers on the far bank taking up a number of swims and driving up and down the river bank. As I booked late I was also aware of an abstraction pump which the description says "Occasionally during dry periods an abstraction pump maybe in operation on this beat for 2-4 hours per day." This was on at arrival at 09:30 and switched off at 20:00. To make matters worse a further pump is situated upstream on the far bank which was on constantly. Be aware of this when booking. It is unlikely to be a stretch to which I will return. This is not sour grapes because of the blank - as a angler I expect the blanks - I don't expect diesel fumes all day.

Back at White House for a third season.
A last minute change in weather forecast, thanks Beeb, and sadly the fly rod remained in the truck. Not to worry, rain and wind don't stop you spinning..... One kelt at about 24" and a pike; not what we want but better than working for a living!

What a wonderful fishery! Lovely fly water at the bottom where you can chest wade on the gravel bar and present a fly in the deeper glide. Then you've got fast clean gravel ideal for the Devon. It was working beautifully through the pools without snagging.
Took 4 pike on a copper mepps 5 in the deep slower water.
Then switching to a silver mepps 5 up streaming a 10lb springer nailed it on the swing round and gave me a right run around. I counted at least 10 aggressive head shakes and eventually it came to the net.
My first salmon on the Wye so I am delighted! Will be back for sure.

The wind from the previous day had disappeared (thankfully) but brilliant blue skies and bright sunshine lead me to a late start thinking that dusk would be the time. Took a leisurely stroll along the whole stretch and being able to see the surface and read the water we found a nice looking spot towards the top (pretty long hike). Cast out about 13:00 just to get some bait in but caught consistently until 17:00 when we thanked the river for it's generosity and walked away happy but beaten up (up and down very steep banks, heavy and absolutely turbocharged Barbel). Proper fishing that only the Wye can provide. Magic.

First time on this stretch. Very nice. Easy to find on the satnav and lots of water to go at with easy access to all of it. The farmer who owns it seemed a very nice man and his cows are friendly. Due to a howling wind I couldn't read the water (it was all just one continuous chop). Pitched up by the abstraction pump as there's a good looking far bank feature but the noise and diesel fumes in the wind soon put us on the move. Walked until the noise of the pump disappeared and just hurled out 'blind'. One chub about 3 pounds. Fished until the pain in the @rse wind/warm pub scales tipped in balance of the latter and left (didn't take very long).

Difficult to find many swims to fish with wind coming into our faces. Couldn't find many swims at all at the top end.

We are very impressed with this beat. It covers a long length with many easily accessible fishing spots. We only had time to try those nearest the car with some success. We walked to the far upper end of the beat and here there are some great looking places with deep smooth water which will be worth a try next time.
The pump was on for a short time but we moved further away to avoid it. There is no longer a second field to park in if cows are in the field. The fence has gone so we parked back at the last gateway - only a short walk to the water.
If you fish from the beach to the overhanging willow don't cast too close to the far bank as there are some nasty snags.
Otherwise a great beat, easily room for 4 anglers who will be spoilt for choice of swims.
