Normally you don't expect to catch much in weather like we had today, but we had a pleasant surprise with 6 trout to half a pound on the nymphs, and 2 dace, of all things! Warning - any one thinking of booking this beat at the moment, the river bed is like walking on grease. Please make sure you have a wading staff, and use it!! Other than that, a beautiful day, and the fish were a bonus.

This report is from Mike Newton( the old timer) not the other MN from Bristol. I thought the fish would be in the fast runs and pocket water but they were not really feeding and were holding up in the deeper pools. Using a long leader and nymphs I had to work really hard to make contact. The takes were very subtle and as many fish that were netted were briefly hooked and lost. The average size was 10" with the largest grayling and trout at 14". A challenging day but worth the effort.

Fished upstream with nymph and dry fly. There was an awkward downstream wind, and very few rises, as no hatch of note. (Though 2 mayflies appeared -- a little late for the party?) The weather was overcast with occasional drizzle in the morning, but improved in the afternoon. The river level was low, below summer level, and the water warm.
The trout were beautiful things, fit and gleaming in the late afternoon light. They ranged from 1/2lb to double that. The river was beautiful.
