Second day on the beat and tried out both bridge Gutter & Spring Pool Gutter. Both produced fish on Czech nymphing as the previous day. Even though another hot day fish were in the mood and had three trout dance off the hook. Again another surprise was a 3/4lb Chub on a black nymph and took me on a merry dance down stream. A big bold and beautiful fish. Another interesting day on this beat. Will be back.

Hot and sunny day greeted me Saturday morning with the river very low. Had booked a two day session and concentrated on the deep runs - Bridge Pool Gutter/Heirag. Czech nymphing brought results with good Grayling - 10 - 12inch. But the big surprise was a 2/3ib Chub. Put up a very good fight and took a GRHE on jig hook like all fish on the day. Found the Heirag pool too deep to fish even though with river was very low. Kept moving from pool to pool which seemed to work well.

The overcast and cooler weather got the fish in a feeding mood. A Life jacket deer hair caddis with a 2.5mm silver bead french nymph duo setup, fished short on a long leader worked a treat. Covering fast broken water the lightening fast hits resulted in good hook ups with this contact method. Most of the fish were of a good average size of 8" - 10" with the largest Trout at 16" and the Grayling at 15", the other was a nice sized Dace. The cork on the new rod I was using for the first time now smells like it should do.

Difficult in full sun and temperatures. Late hatch but few or little rising. One salmon par returned and a WBT to 1 1/2lb taken; one of 2lbs + missed. Sporadic feeding frenzy in Heirag of a dozen fish +, but failed miserably to 'match the hatch'.

I found this beat quite difficult, all the fish came in the morning and I think that I should have rather focused on the early morning and then called it a day. There was a nasty cold wind blowing downstream the entire day and that made the fishing difficult. It may have put the fish down or put off the hatches. I did get back on the river late in the evening (it was the longest day of the year), and there was a considerable mixed hatch of upwings and caddis flies but not a fish moved. Never saw a rise.. So a tough day at the office, but I enjoyed it, as I have enjoyed all the beats I have fished and I am very thankful that the Wye Usk foundation makes that possible.. Thank you
