It turns out that obsessively looking at the river level gauges will not make a flood disappear. Was a chocolate torrent and I couldn't fish. Hoping for a wash off please.

ACCESS ISSUE: Started badly when I really hurt my back trying to open and then close the first gate which has to be lifted, weighs approx 2cwt and is hanging by one hinge. This is no longer a gate. Subsequent pain made wading difficult.
Gusty downstream wind didn’t help finding bottom when nymphing but it’s probably my fault that I only touched a couple and didn’t connect.
POACHERS: The afternoon was made exciting but in a negative way, when two poachers who I had flushed out issued brief but very nasty threats from the road bridge. I had already contacted the EA number and reported them. They were very well equipped, using spinning gear and clearly knew what they were about. But I really couldn’t relax afterwards as they knew where I was parked and my fevered imagination had my van (or me) being trashed and I didn’t go exploring. Not my best day. I couldn’t shut the gate by the road and I don’t think other rod had been able to either.
Massive hatch at end of the day, very little sign of active fish. But it’s always good to get out.

Overcast day, slightly breezy, water cool for August after some rain in the last few days. Plenty of water. Just the most occasional fly coming off the water and almost no fish seen on the surface all day.
3 trout to hand, at least 3 more on and off, plus some other nice takes. All on weighted pheasant tail variants fished across and down or (on my very first outing with my new Euro nymph kit!) Euro nymphing!
Always interesting to see how the river has changed from season to season. The bottom end feels as fishy as ever all the way up - although there looked to be an otter / mink at the top of the "island' (too far away to see properly). Two fish from there in the morning. The bank is much eroded next to the field though, and there aren't as many ways down as there used to be!
Top end was full of fish with one landed and lots of is on and off, especially half way down the top run and then into the pool / bay by the outfall.
There middle of the beat is much changed with the appearance of a new pool (or certainly to my memory it seems new this season!). That looked fishy but despite a good take we had none landed there.
We noted the gate to the upstream car park couldn't be opened with the normal combination - perhaps just us?
