Fantastic to be back on the river on such a lovely spring day, which proved to be the last before lockdown.
The river was carrying a lot of water, which was gin clear, this combined with the bright sunshine and keen easterly breeze prevented me from troubling the scorer today. There was a brief hatch of March browns and olives at about 1.30 but I saw no rises to them.
I saw beautiful wildlife however, including, kites, buzzards, heron, dippers and numerous wagtails. A wonderful place to be before the enforced pause to the season. The winter floods had led to several bank collapses and substantial shifts in gravel beds, no surprise really.
Note there was roadworks on the approach to the lay by making access difficult however I would think these will be long gone by the time we resume.

River a little high, and pushing through, but clear. East wind made things chilly and a little tricky. A brief hatch when the wind eased off around 2pm brought a few fish up. Nice to see they are still here after all the floods, even if i couldn't tempt any.

7 degrees on the thermometer but a bitter easterly wind made it feel really cold and was not great for fly hatches. The water was showing 2ft on the gauge but decent clarity. We managed 7 trout up to 10 inches on spiders and emergers which we were happy with given the conditions. There was a trickle hatch of LDOs at around 11.30 but little came up for them. 2 March Browns were spotted. Still, nice to be back on the water and a welcome momentary distraction from `you know what`.

River up 2’ from my visit a couple of weeks ago. Running very fast and coloured with a strong downstream breeze. Only occasional olive hatching and no sign of any moving fish. Tried weighted nymph on a sinking line in the deeper slower holes. Gave up mid-afternoon having not touched anything

Spent a couple of hours at Dinas. Lots of small wbt popping the surface of the pools but never worked out how to catch them - we both tried everything in our box - patterns, sizes, method! Nowt!

Fish rising all day, just couldn't tempt them to either dries or wets. For some reason I find the Usk much harder to catch on than the Wye. I know where I'm heading next time. Nice enough beat though.

Very warm and sunny made it a difficult day for fishing.

Cool upstream wind kept things quiet with only a few rises until around 5pm when it dropped off and flies hatched in enough numbers to get the trout feeding. Three trout between the two of us, (two about half pound and one at three quarters), all on different dries.
All fish released.
