I attended the Wild Stream Fishing Day based at Presteigne on the 13/05/17. The day was both informative and enjoyable with excellent instruction given by our guide while fishing the Eyton beat. Great value for money especially if you opted for the following day of individual fishing on a different beat. My thanks to LAFA and the W and U Foundation for organising the event.

Only a couple of trout to hand and fair few grayling. all taking 2.5mm baetis nymph on point. not really sure of the trout potential in this part of the lugg as this beat to me screams grayling. the weather was cold wet and cloudy with very limited fly on the water, just the odd ldo. will give it another go end of june when grayling season proper is in full flow and see whether there is also a good head of trout. the lugg like the monnow do take a while to wake up so this may of been the case on this cold wet spring day

A beautiful day with a mix of mist and sun with frost on the trees. 0°C with the water running clear but not too low, the conditions looked pretty good but I only managed to hook a couple of fingerlings on pink shrimp nymphs. I did have a rather wonderful encounter with 3 otters that slipped out from their den and plopped into the water directly in from of me, just as I had made my first cast. While it absolutely made my day I couldn't help but wander what effect the fairly significant resurgence of otters on the wye and usk river systems in general, has had on the fish stocks and would be very interested if the foundation has any relevant data.
